Palmanova: The Star Fortess: Your first major landmark is the extraordinary town of Palmanova, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This unique fortress town was built by the Venetians in the 16th century and is famous for its perfect nine-pointed star shape. Cycling into its geometrically precise piazza offers a fascinating glimpse into Renaissance military architecture. It’s an ideal spot for a mid-morning coffee before you continue toward the ancient world.
Aquileia: A Roman Imperial Capital: Further south, the path leads you to the ancient city of Aquileia, another jewel in the UNESCO crown. Once one of the largest and wealthiest cities of the Roman Empire, its archaeological area is among the most important in Northern Italy. Take time to explore the magnificent Basilica with its stunning 4th-century mosaic floor, wander through the ruins of the Roman forum, and feel the weight of history beneath your wheels. This stop is an undeniable highlight of the entire Alpe Adria route.
The Grado Lagoon and the Final Approach: Leaving Aquileia, the landscape transforms dramatically as you enter the ethereal world of the Grado Lagoon. The final stretch of the route takes you across a spectacular causeway, a thin ribbon of road that seemingly floats upon the water. Surrounded by the tranquil lagoon, dotted with traditional fishermen's huts (casoni) and teeming with birdlife, this is a truly magical and unforgettable approach to the sea. The scent of salt on the air signals your journey’s end is near.
