Setting Off: The Resilient Town of Venzone

Your ride begins in Venzone, a town declared a national monument and famously rebuilt stone-by-stone after the devastating 1976 earthquake. Leaving its beautifully restored medieval walls, the path initially follows the Tagliamento river valley before veering southeast towards the Friulian plains. The initial kilometres are serene, taking you through a mix of dedicated cycle paths and low-traffic local roads that wind through small villages and farmland.

Major Highlights Along the Route

The Fortress of Osoppo: A significant landmark along this stage is the Fortress of Osoppo. Perched on a solitary hill overlooking the plains, this historic fortification played a key role in the Napoleonic Wars and the Italian Risorgimento. While reaching the fortress itself requires a short, steep climb off the main path, the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Tagliamento River are well worth the effort.

The Fields of Feletto and Tavagnacco: Continuing south, the route flattens completely as you enter the agricultural heartland of Friuli. You will cycle through the municipalities of Feletto and Tavagnacco, known for their fields of corn and soybeans. This section is characterised by quiet, straight country lanes, offering a peaceful and meditative cycling experience. It provides a stark contrast to the dramatic mountain passes of the previous stages.

Arriving in Udine

The final stretch of the journey guides you into the urban landscape of Udine. The approach is well-signposted, leading you through suburban areas before culminating in the city's historic centre. Udine, often called the "City of Tiepolo," is a hub of Venetian elegance, art, and vibrant culture. Reaching Udine marks the successful completion of the penultimate stage of your Alpe Adria adventure. The city is rich with amenities, offering a wide array of accommodations and exceptional Friulian cuisine and wine. Its main square, Piazza della Libertà, is often described as the most beautiful Venetian square on the mainland. Take the time to explore the city's castle, cathedral, and numerous osterias. A final bike check and a restful evening are essential as you prepare for the final push to the sea.
