Before you begin, understanding the gentle nature of this stage will allow you to plan a relaxed and enjoyable ride. The route is predominantly flat, following the well-maintained Drau Cycle Path (R1), making it one of the most accessible stages of the entire Alpe Adria route.
Total Distance: 44.9 kilometres (27.9 miles)Total Ascent: 288 metres (945 feet)Total Descent: 382 metres (1253 feet)Primary Path: Following the Drau Cycle Path (R1)
The minimal elevation change makes this stage ideal for families, casual cyclists, and anyone looking for a less demanding day in the saddle while soaking in the beautiful Carinthian scenery.
Your journey commences in Spittal an der Drau, a town renowned for its magnificent Renaissance palace, Schloss Porcia. Before you set off, take a moment to admire this architectural gem, considered one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Austria. Leaving the town, the path quickly joins the River Drau, and you will find yourself pedalling along a peaceful, well-paved route surrounded by lush meadows and the distant silhouette of the Nock Mountains.
The majority of Stage 4 is spent on the Drauradweg. The path meanders through a peaceful landscape of riverside meadows, small woodlands, and agricultural fields. The surrounding mountains of the Gurktal Alps to the north and the Gailtal Alps to the south provide a scenic backdrop without requiring any strenuous climbing. This section is particularly well-suited for relaxed cycling, allowing you to enjoy the natural environment and maintain a steady, comfortable pace. You will pass through several small villages and hamlets along the way, offering opportunities to rest and experience local Carinthian life.

The Drau Cycle Path (R1):The majority of this stage unfolds on the Drau Cycle Path, a celebrated route known for its excellent surface and clear signposting. You will cycle through quiet woodlands and open fields, with the river always in sight. The path is almost entirely separate from motorised traffic, ensuring a safe and immersive experience in nature. Along the way, you will find numerous "Drauwirt" establishments—certified riverside inns offering delicious local cuisine and refreshing drinks, perfect for a planned rest stop.
The Town of Paternion: Approximately halfway through your ride, you will reach the small market town of Paternion. This charming settlement offers a glimpse into traditional Carinthian life. It serves as an excellent point to pause, perhaps enjoy a snack, and appreciate the peaceful atmosphere of the Drau Valley before continuing the final stretch of your ride.
The final portion of the stage brings you into Villach, the second-largest city in Carinthia. The cycle path leads you smoothly into the city's outskirts and then towards the centre. Villach is a lively hub, uniquely situated at the confluence of the Drau and Gail rivers. The city is known for its vibrant Mediterranean-influenced atmosphere, a charming old town (Altstadt) with colourful facades, and a bustling main square (Hauptplatz). St. Jakob's Church, with its 94-metre-high tower, dominates the skyline and offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding region for those willing to make the climb.
Villach is well-equipped to welcome cyclists, with numerous accommodation options, restaurants, and bicycle service shops. The city’s thermal spa, the KärntenTherme in Warmbad-Villach, offers a perfect opportunity to relax and rejuvenate after your ride. The confluence of Austrian, Italian, and Slovenian cultures gives Villach a distinct and inviting character, making it an excellent place to end your day's journey.
Completing Stage 4 brings you to a significant crossroads on the Alpe Adria trail. Villach marks a key transition point before the route crosses the border into Italy. The city serves as an ideal base to rest, resupply, and prepare for the next leg of your adventure.
As you enjoy the amenities of Villach, take the time to check your equipment and review the details for Stage 5. The next stage will guide you from Austria into Italy, heading towards the town of Tarvisio. This border crossing marks a significant cultural and geographical shift. This upcoming stage involves a more significant climb, so a good night's rest in Villach is essential for the adventure ahead. Read more on Stage 5: Villach to Tarvisio 37km
