Stage 5 is one of the shorter and more manageable legs of the entire Alpe Adria route, defined by a gentle, consistent climb along a former railway line. This makes for a comfortable and scenic day of riding, suitable for cyclists of all abilities.

Total Distance: 39 kilometres (24 miles)
Total Ascent: 598 metres (1962 feet)
Total Descent: 319 metres (1047 feet)
Primary Path: Following the Gail River and the old Tarvisian Railway line (Ciclovia Alpe Adria Radweg)

Setting Off: The Town of Villach

Your ride begins in Villach, a charming town situated at the confluence of the Drau and Gail rivers. As you depart from the town’s vibrant centre, the path leads you westwards, following the Gail River. The initial section is flat and picturesque, allowing you to settle into a relaxed pace on well-maintained cycle paths. You’ll pedal through serene suburban and rural landscapes, with the towering peaks of the Karawanks and Carnic Alps framing your view to the south.

Major Highlights Along the Route

As you leave Villach behind, the route soon joins the path of the former Tarvisian Railway. This dedicated cycleway, free from traffic, guides you through a stunning natural corridor of forests, rock cuttings, and quaint Austrian villages.

The Village of Arnoldstein: The main waypoint in the Austrian section is the market town of Arnoldstein, located just before the Italian border. It is home to the imposing ruins of the Arnoldstein Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery perched on a hill overlooking the town. This serves as an excellent spot for a short break, offering a final taste of Austrian culture before you cross into Italy.

Crossing the Austro-Italian Border: The most significant moment of this stage is the border crossing itself. Unlike dramatic mountain passes, this transition is subtle and seamless. One moment you are cycling through the Austrian countryside, and the next, signs and architecture begin to shift, signalling your arrival in Italy. The path continues uninterrupted, making for a smooth and memorable entry into a new country without ever leaving the saddle.

The Val Canale and Tarvisian Scenery: Upon entering Italy, you are officially in the Val Canale (Kanaltal), a valley renowned for its linguistic and cultural crossroads of Italian, Slavic, and Germanic influences. The cycle path meanders through this scenic alpine valley, passing through small tunnels and over viaducts that were once part of the railway infrastructure. The landscape is dominated by the majestic peaks of the Julian Alps, offering breathtaking views as you pedal deeper into Italian territory.

Arriving in Tarvisio

The final few kilometres bring you into Tarvisio, a bustling alpine town that has historically been a hub for merchants and travellers. Its unique position at the tri-border area of Italy, Austria, and Slovenia gives it a distinctive international character. Reaching Tarvisio marks the successful completion of a memorable 37-kilometre border-crossing ride. The town offers a wonderful array of Italian cafes, restaurants, and comfortable hotels to welcome weary cyclists. It is the perfect place to celebrate your journey with authentic pasta or a well-deserved espresso.

From this charming base, an enchanting excursion awaits: a visit to the breathtaking Fusine Lakes (Lago di Fusine). Located just 10 kilometres away, these two stunning glacial lakes, Lago Superiore and Lago Inferiore, are cradled by the majestic Julian Alps, offering a perfect escape for nature lovers to hike, picnic, or simply stand in awe of the scenery.
