Annyeong and welcome to the vibrant soul of South Korea. Your journey commences in Seoul, a captivating capital where high-tech innovation and towering skyscrapers coexist with ancient traditions and an unrivaled culinary scene. Should you arrive with time to spare, immerse yourself in this magnificent metropolis at your own leisure, discovering the seamless blend of old and new that defines one of Asia's most dynamic cities.
This afternoon at 4 pm, you will convene for a welcome meeting to begin your curated experience. Following this, allow your leader to guide you through the bustling alleyways of the renowned Gwangjang Market for an unforgettable street food dinner tour. Established in 1905, this is one of Korea's oldest and largest traditional markets, teeming with energy and authentic flavours. Here, you will have the opportunity to indulge in an array of beloved streetside delicacies, from the addictively simple mayak gimbap (miniature rice rolls) to succulent mandu (North Korean-style dumplings) and crispy bindaetteok (savory mung bean pancakes), all complemented by an assortment of traditional kimchi.
As evening descends, you will ascend to the peak of Naksan Mountain. From this serene vantage point, a breathtaking panorama of Seoul's glittering skyline unfolds, offering a moment of tranquillity and a spectacular perspective on the sprawling city lights below.
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Seoul, Travelodge Myeongdong City Hall offers a stylish sanctuary just moments away from the city's most iconic attractions and bustling shopping districts. After a day of urban exploration, retreat to the comfort of this modern haven, where thoughtful amenities and a prime location converge to create the perfect base for your Korean adventure.
Rise with the morning light for a poignant journey to the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), the stark border separating North and South Korea. Standing on the South Korean side, you will gain a profound understanding of the peninsula's division, a lasting legacy of the Korean War. Your exploration will take you to the Third Tunnel of Aggression, a clandestine tunnel dug by North Korea, and across the symbolic Unification Bridge, a pathway laden with hopes for reunification. At Imjingak Park, discover a place of memory and tribute, filled with statues and monuments dedicated to the war. Then, from the Dora Observatory, you may peer through binoculars across the border into North Korea itself.
In the afternoon, step back in time with a visit to the magnificent Gyeongbokgung Palace. As the main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty, its grand halls and elegant pavilions offer a glimpse into Korea's imperial past. Following this, you will wander through the charming lanes of Bukchon Hanok Village, a beautifully preserved residential area where traditional Korean houses, known as hanoks, line the streets. Your tour will conclude in Bukchon, leaving you free to continue exploring its artisan workshops and teahouses at your own pace.
Note:
- Tours of the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) can only be operated by UN-designated operators in South Korea, so you’ll be joined by other travellers on this tour. The tour will last around five hours.
- You will need your passport for the DMZ tour, plus drinks and some light snacks. Casual attire will be fine but avoid large logos, sleeveless shirts or military wear.
- Buchon village is banned for group visitors on Sundays. If your trip starts on a Saturday, the visit to Bukchon village will be in the afternoon on Day 8 when you return to Seoul. In this case, today you’ll be able to enjoy some free time after Gyeongbukgung Palace instead.
In the morning, a local express bus will sweep you away to the captivating east coast city of Sokcho, a gateway to coastal beauty and profound history. Upon arrival, your first immersion into local life will be at the vibrant Sokcho Central Market. Here, amidst the lively calls of vendors and the colourful displays of fresh produce and seafood, you will gain an intimate insight into the daily rhythms of the community and have the opportunity to delight your palate with an array of local snacks.
Following some leisure time to explore at your own pace, your journey continues to Abai Village, a small island enclave within Sokcho that holds a poignant history. For generations, this village has been a sanctuary for refugees who fled North Korea during the war, and their stories are woven into the very fabric of the community. Reaching this historic haven is an experience in itself; you will join fellow travellers on a small, hand-pulled barge, working together to pull the rope that guides you across the water.
Once ashore, you will be graciously welcomed into the home of a North Korean refugee's family. Here, you will listen to their personal accounts of displacement and resilience, gaining a deep and moving understanding of how history has shaped their lives. Afterward, you will partake in a private cooking demonstration, where you will learn the art of making giant Korean dumplings, a cherished local specialty. The day culminates in a shared dinner with the family, a feast of home-cooked delicacies that may include japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), kimbap (Korean-style sushi rolls), and traditional rice beer. The payment the family receives for this memorable evening is a direct contribution to the Abai Village Preservation Society, ensuring their unique culture and stories endure for generations to come.
Perched on the edge of the East Sea, Marinabay Sokcho offers a sublime retreat where every room presents a breathtaking ocean or lake view, inviting you to witness the serene dance of sunrise from your private balcony. Indulge in unparalleled relaxation at the hotel's infinity pool, which seems to melt into the horizon, or rejuvenate your senses with a tranquil session at the aromatic sauna and spa.
Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.
Today, you will venture to Seoraksan, Korea’s most celebrated mountain and the third highest on the peninsula. A designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, this natural marvel offers a range of hiking trails that wind through its dramatic, granite-peaked landscapes. As you ascend, you will be rewarded with breathtaking vistas of mist-wreathed valleys and the East Sea glistening in the distance.
The afternoon and evening are yours to explore the coastal city of Sokcho at your leisure. You might choose to visit the Yeong Geum Jeong Pavilion, a serene coastal structure offering stunning panoramic views of the sea. Alternatively, you could hire a bicycle and circumnavigate the scenic Yeongrang Lake, a tranquil oasis perfect for a leisurely ride. For dinner, perhaps indulge in a classic Korean hotpot or visit the iconic Sokcho Expo Tower for sweeping views of the city. For a more relaxing end to the day, consider a quiet stroll along Sokcho Harbour or a rejuvenating soak at the renowned Cheoksan Hot Springs.
Optional Activity: (additional cost) Bike Ride around Yeongrang Lake
Your hiking time today will be approximately 3 hours. If you don’t feel like hiking, you may choose to take an optional cable car to Gwongeumseong Fortress (at your own expense) or visit Sinheungsa Temple in another part of the park.
This morning, we journey to the historic Andong Hahoe Folk Village, a living museum that has preserved the architecture and traditions of the Joseon Dynasty. Upon arrival, you will join your leader for a captivating stroll through this UNESCO World Heritage site, wandering among traditional thatched-roof houses, including the distinguished residence that had the honour of hosting Queen Elizabeth II during her visit in 1999.
We will then visit the remnants of a Confucian school, offering a glimpse into the scholarly life of past generations. Afterwards, a short walk will take us to the Buyongdae Cliff, where you'll be treated to a magnificent bird's-eye view of the entire village, with its elegant Hanok houses nestled gracefully along the curving Nakdong River. As we explore, we may be fortunate enough to witness a traditional masked dance performance, a vibrant cultural ritual central to the village's heritage. For those interested in delving deeper into this art form, a visit to the nearby Hahoe Mask Museum is highly recommended.
Later, we will proceed to our accommodation for the night. You will have the unique opportunity to stay in an authentic Hanok, a traditional Korean house, providing an immersive and memorable experience that offers deeper insight into the local way of life. Traditionally, Korean beds in Hanoks comprise a futon-like mattress placed on the floor, which could be folded up and placed in the cupboard in the morning. While floor bedding can seem firm compared with standard western mattresses, the floor is heated, providing a comfortable night’s sleep.
Your travel time today will be approximately 3.5 hours.
Note: You will need to have an overnight pack for tonight's Hanok stay as you'll leave your main luggage on the bus. There's only one restaurant at the village so the food options will be limited. Maybe stock up in Sokcho if you have special dietary requirements. Please consult with your leader in advance about your food option here in advance.
Bid farewell to your host family as your journey continues to Busan, South Korea’s vibrant second-largest city. Here, a dynamic landscape of mountains, beaches, and hot springs awaits, along with a culinary scene celebrated for its deliciously fresh seafood.
Upon arrival, you will have the rare opportunity to meet with a Haenyeo diver. These remarkable "sea women" make their living by diving into the ocean to gather clams, sea urchins, and oysters, renowned for their incredible ability to hold their breath for extended periods. This centuries-old tradition, now a dwindling industry, has historically been a vital source of income for generations of women, allowing them to support their families through the region's changing fortunes. You will visit the local Haenyeo community centre to speak with a former diver, who will share personal stories of her experiences, the transformations Busan has witnessed over the years, and her life today.
Next, you will visit the magnificent Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, a famous Buddhist sanctuary uniquely situated along the coast. Explore this rare architectural gem, with the endless ocean providing a stunning backdrop to its intricate design. Following this, we will proceed to the Gamcheon Culture Village, a former slum transformed into a vibrant artistic community. Its steep streets are lined with brightly coloured houses, quirky galleries, and charming cafes, offering a wonderful overview of the city's creative spirit. As evening approaches, you may wish to gather with a few of your fellow travellers and find a scenic viewpoint to watch the sunset paint the sky over the city and the sea.
Nestled along the pristine shores of Haeundae Beach, the 4 star, W Residence Hotel invites you into a world of seaside sophistication and unparalleled comfort. Surrender to tranquillity in the spa, savour exquisite culinary creations, and let the panoramic ocean views from your room become the backdrop to an unforgettable retreat.
Note: In the odd case where your Haenyeo diver is not available, you’ll visit another local lady who’s witnessed the massive changes in Busan and can share her stories with us.
This morning, your journey continues to the seaside park of Igidae, where you'll embark on a breathtaking coastal walk. Follow the scenic trail that hugs the cliffs, offering unparalleled views of the ocean and the city skyline. For those who wish to combine their exploration with environmental stewardship, there is an option to participate in 'plogging' – collecting litter as you jog or walk.
Next, you will witness the future of urban agriculture with a visit to a local 'Smart Farm'. This innovative incubation site showcases how local startups are transforming recycled shipping containers into vertical farms to grow crops sustainably. You'll also see how these containers are repurposed into charming shops and cafes, creating a vibrant hub of ingenuity.
The remainder of the day is yours to explore at your leisure. As evening descends, perhaps you'll choose to see Busan from a different perspective with an optional night cruise, watching from the water as the sun sets and the city's lights begin to sparkle. Alternatively, you could immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of the Haeundae Night Market, sampling local delicacies, or enjoy the spontaneous performances of buskers along the boardwalk.
Optional Activity: (at an additional cost) Busan Night cruise
This morning, you will board the KTX Bullet Train for a swift and comfortable journey back to Seoul. Upon your arrival, the remainder of the afternoon is yours to explore at your leisure. You might choose to delve into the nation's rich history at the National Museum of Korea, which houses an extensive collection of artifacts spanning centuries. Alternatively, immerse yourself in the world of art at the prestigious Leeum Museum of Art, where traditional and contemporary works are beautifully juxtaposed. For those with a passion for shopping, the vibrant Dongdaemun district offers an unparalleled retail experience, with vast shopping complexes and bustling markets.
As evening approaches, you will reconvene with your fellow travellers for a memorable final group dinner. South Korea has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons, shaped largely by continental influences and seasonal monsoon patterns. Winters are cold and dry, with Seoul averaging around -6°C to 3°C in January, as cold air masses move in from the Asian mainland. Summers are hot and humid, particularly in August, when temperatures in the capital typically range from 25°C to 33°C and the summer monsoon brings heavy rainfall. Spring and autumn are mild and comfortable, with temperatures generally sitting between 10°C and 22°C, making them the most temperate periods of the year. Overall, the country's continental climate produces a wide annual temperature range, from sub-zero winter lows to summer highs above 30°C.
Please note that the seasonal climate of South Korea means that this trip may, for some people, feel more difficult during the hotter/more humid Summer months (July/August/September). If you are travelling in the Spring or Autumn the weather is milder, however it can sometimes be cool and wet. Please ensure that you pack and dress appropriately.

Hotel rooms: Many South Korean hotels have a limited supply of double rooms. If you are a couple travelling, please advise at the time of booking if you would like double bedding (subject to availability). Double bed in South Korea also tends to be smaller than normal western standard, closer to a queen size bed. It may be possible to book twin share rooms where you may push the beds together into one bigger bed, but this can't be guaranteed.
Air-conditioning & Heating: Air-conditioning is not usually turned on until the warmer season. The traditional housing has floor heating.
Hanok Stay: Your mattress will be on the floor. If you find that the surface is too hard, you can stack the bedding or ask for an extra mattress. The futon-like mattress may feel firm compared to Western beds, but heated floors ensure comfort. Extra mattresses are available upon request.
Fitness: A good degree of fitness is recommended for this trip as a lot of walking is involved. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. You will need to be able to handle your luggage on metro and in busy transport hubs, so we advise packing light.
Extend Trip: This trip doesn't spend much time in Seoul so we recommend extending your trip to enjoy this city to its fullest. Please contact us about adding additional nights of accommodation to your booking.
Packing: We strongly advise you to pack light as you may need to carry your own luggage through public bus and train stations, or up and down a few flight of stairs. The hiking at Seoraksan National Park will take about 3 hours but you may skip it and visit other sites if you are not up for it (at your own expense).
Dieatry Needs: Wherever possible we will cater for dietary needs for included meals, but there may be times when those with special requirements may wish to supplement inclusions with their own supplies from markets or supermarkets. Please note that some dietary requirements, such as Gluten Free, will be uncommon in South Korea and you may need to explain to your leader what you can and can't eat as well as research common dishes before you travel.
Allergies: For those suffering from particular food allergies, your group leader will endeavor to disclose to their fullest knowledge the main ingredients in dishes being consumed. It is, however, your personal responsibility to ensure that you do not ingest any foods to which you are allergic and research suitable local foods before travelling.
Vegetarians & Vegans: Being Vegan or Vegetarian can be difficult in Korea since there is fish sauce or shrimp paste used as fermentation agents. However, there are always plenty of meat free options on menus including vegetable, tofu and egg dishes that come out with rice as a meal. However, keep in mind that we share dishes and dishes may be cooked served along with meat dishes. Your leader can advise on some local favourites or help you order and delivery them. Dairy is uncommon in local cooking. Vegans should also have few problems finding tasty meals in most locations. Nearly all cities will have vegetarian restaurants, often near to temples or monasteries that specialize in Buddhist cuisine.
