Today, after a hearty breakfast, we will set off on an exciting adventure across Seoul, South Korea, learning about the city's deep and varied cultural heritage along the way. The first stop on our journey will be at Cheonggyecheon, where a long-lost river was unearthed in 2005. Then, we reminisce about the past in Tapgol Park, where we find out more about the independence struggle that ultimately created Korea.
From there, we move to Insadong, an artisan neighbourhood where traditional tea houses and souvenir shops are arranged in an entrancing manner. After, we move to Jogyesa Temple, a magnificent temple complex in the heart of Seoul. At Gwanghwamun, admire the majestic statues of Admiral Yi and King Sejong; men who played crucial roles in Korean history.
Our next stop is Gyeongbokgung Palace. It was the centre of power up to Japanese occupation at the start of the last century and it was built in 1394. Here, we might be able to witness the changing of guards.
We finish our trip at Bukchon Hanok Village, a collection of traditional Korean houses from the Joseon dynasty that we've been exploring over the last several days. Fasten your seatbelts, because you're about to go on a ride like no other! (Please note that the order of these activities may change).
Today we will take a trip to Panmunjom, the only location on the Korean Peninsula where North and South Koreans may meet face to face. The Joint Security Area (JSA), also known as the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), was constructed between the two countries and the 1953 peace accord was signed here. U.S. Army officials will provide a briefing before allowing visitors inside the JSA.
Freedom House, the blue barracks (where North and South Korean negotiators meet), the visitor's observation station, and the bridge of no return are just some of the highlights of the trip. During the course of the journey, a traditional Korean dish will be provided for lunch,
NOTE: Due to government restrictions in this place, this excursion is guided by a local JSA specialised guide and not by your tour leader. The Panmunjom tour may also be cancelled at any time and we may visit other important areas of North/South Korean history such as The Third Tunnel. Nationals from Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Pakistan, Sudan, and Syria will not be allowed to take part in this tour (according to the regulations). It’ll also be difficult for South Korean and Chinese nationals to join the tour. Due to strict rules, dual passport holders must provide us with exact passport details you will be entering South Korea with, which will also be required for the day tour. During the excursion, you need to follow mandatory instructions from military personnel and guides while on tour.
Today we will set out on a mesmerising transfer to Gangneung on Korea's flourishing east coast, famed for its alluring culinary hub. In the heart of Gangwon Province, you’ll explore one of the most beautiful culinary bases, where all the food is produced and processed naturally and according to centuries-old recipes that have remained relevant over time. Fermented delights including kimchi, red pepper, bean paste and fish sauce are stored and aged in clay vessels and may stay for over 5 years. Herbs are grown and harvested from gardens, and wild herbs are collected from mountains in the surrounding area.
On our journey, we will learn how to make bibimbap, a typical Korean meal that has rice, pork, vegetables, and numerous side dishes seasoned with herbs straight from the garden. Our appetites will be satisfied at lunch, and we'll have plenty of energy to continue on our adventure.
We'll soon arrive in Sokcho City, a bustling seaside municipality where a picture-perfect hotel awaits. Until 1945, Sokcho City was a part of North Korea, making our excursion all the more fascinating and illuminating. It's an experience you shouldn't pass up!

The morning's travel journey from Gyeongju to Haeinsa Temple will take approximately three hours. It was awarded as a UNESCO heritage site in 1995.
In the presence of monks who have devoted their lives to prayer and meditation, you will be exposed to a strict Buddhist way of life. Swapping your clothes for monastic garb is the first step towards full immersion. Following the opening ceremony and introductions, you are free to roam the temple grounds at their leisure. Beautiful views of the surrounding nature make the temple complex a retreat for individuals seeking spiritual solace. The Haeinsa Temple complex is a mesmerising masterpiece that will leave you in amazement with its elaborate construction and detailed every corner.
Following the Buddhist ritual and tea ceremony, we will have a traditional vegetarian lunch. A 9 o'clock bedtime means an early rise in the morning, and the schedule is always susceptible to change.
Experience traditional Korean-style lodging and fully immerse into the simple was of living with a stay at the Haeinsa temple. The cosy rooms are furnished with essential comforts, including blankets, pillows, and a heater. Enjoy the customary layout with underfloor heating and traditional “Yo” mattresses similar to futons and placed on the floor. Level 3 Moderate: Expect easy, medium-length walks or harder, shorter walks. Some experience is useful, but not essential. Good health and reasonable fitness are important. There will be walks at higher altitudes and some longer, harder days. Generally, though, the underfoot conditions will be fair. A walking day is normally five to seven hours; daily ascents will likely be around 1,640ft to 2,625ft (500m to 800m), perhaps with the odd day around 2,955ft to 3,280ft (900m to 1,000m).
Level 5 Challenging: Fitness is vital with extended walking in mountainous terrain. You might also experience high altitude, challenging climates and remote locations. Trekking experience is desirable, but not vital if you are confident in your physical condition. Walking days are usually between six and eight hours, although they may be longer for passes or peaks. Daily ascents can be around 2,955ft to 3,280ft (900m to 1,000m), perhaps with the odd day around 3,610ft to 3,940ft (1,100m to 1,200m).
Level 7 Tough: Trekking experience is essential and preferably at altitude. You need complete confidence in your ability to trek for many days over difficult terrain. You may encounter extreme altitude and weather conditions and may need to use ice axes and crampons. Stamina is essential as walking days last six to nine hours (sometimes more on occasions). Daily ascents will likely be around 2,955ft to 3,280ft (900m to 1,000m), perhaps with the odd day around 3,610ft to 3,940ft (1,100m to 1,200m).
Split and optional grades: Where a trip falls between two grades, an intermediate or ‘split’ grade is used. For example, Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate). Occasionally there are optional ascents available; in this case, the grade will be highlighted.
Korea has four seasons, with a wet monsoon/summer season in the middle of the year, and a cold winter from November to March. We aim to avoid the coldest parts of winter and hot/humid summer and visit at the ideal times of year; spring (late March -May); view the cherry blossoms generally at the end of March/early April and autumn (September-November), with a stunning array of foliage colours, warm temperatures and clear skies. Average temperatures during these seasons range from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Whilst these are not rainy seasons the odd shower cannot be ruled out and evenings will be cooler.
You’ll travel by air-conditioned private mini-coach. On other days, we will mostly use private vehicle transport but will also make use of the metro system and bullet train from Busan to Seoul.
This is tour is designed to highlight the best of the Republic of Korea (known as the ROK). Most of our travel is by private vehicle, so the journeys are not physically demanding. You will walk mostly in cities and towns and although not strenuous, the amount of walking each day can be considerable and fast-paced (good comfortable walking shoes are recommended). We will also be ascending and descending a lot of steps. The walk in Seoraksan NP is optional.
