Level 2, Approx 8km (5 miles), Elevation Gain: 91m (300 ft)
Meet up with your tour leaders at 8:30 in the lobby of Courtyard King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel. Please arrive in your hiking clothes, a daypack with your rain gear and anything else you think you may need for today's activities, and your luggage ( it will be transported to our first night's accommodations).
Our journey begins with a pleasing drive along Hawaii's western edge through Kona coffee farms, primordial Mauna Loa lava flows, and a century-old macadamia nut groves. After arriving at the southernmost point of the United States, we begin a hike to Papakōlea beach, one of the few green-sand beaches in the world. You are advised to bring a hat and sturdy hiking shoes as our hike today is mostly exposed.
Following the trail, we are taken along the Pacific Ocean to a beach carved into the side of Pu'u Mahana, a 50,000-year-old cinder cone from the Mauna Loa volcano. The distinctive green sand here is created by a mineral known as emerald-hued olivine, which is commonly found in Big Island lava and stays permanently on the beach because of its relative heaviness.
Enjoy lunch and unwind in the green sand before we head back from this memorable out-and-back trail. In the afternoon, we shuttle up to the exuberant rainforest of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to our home for the night, Kilauea Lodge, a stunning bed-and-breakfast located right outside the osrl in the artists' community of the Volcano Village.
You’ll stay at a quaint and cosy lodge nestled on the foot of Mount Kilauea, Hawaii’s youngest and most active volcano. Unwind in the hot tub or revel in the area's tranquility at the gazebo before dining at The Rim Restaurant in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, located at the edge of the Kilauea caldera.
HIKINGLevel 1, Approx. 8km (5 miles), Elevation Gain: 91m (300 ft)
THREE BIKING OPTIONS: Level 1, Approx. 14km (9 miles), Elevation Gain: 30m (100 ft) Level 2, Approx. 26km (16 miles), Elevation Gain: 152m (500 ft) Level 3, Approx. 47km (29 miles), Elevation Gain: 640m (2100 ft)
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we will proceed to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where we explore the collapsed summit area of the Kilauea Volcano which was caused by lava eruption from the lower East Rift Zone fissure. It happened in 2018 and resulted in over 80,000 earthquakes and an entirely mutated summit caldera.
In the continuity of the day's adventure, we go through the preserved rainforest and a grove of huge ferns and native ohia lehua trees, then take a quick look at the black lava moonscape of the newly formed Halema'uma'u crater. Watch out for colorful birds such as the I’iwi, with its bright red body and salmon-colored bill, as you hike.
After lunch, your tour leaders fit your bike and educate you briefly on biking techniques and safety before returning to the park to explore on two wheels. We bike along the Chain of Craters Road, tracing collapsed pit craters along the flanks of Kilauea that portray the fiery history of a landscape that is constantly changing. Be astonished at the wonders of nature as you wind through the extensive lava fields of the East Rift Zone.
Spend the rest of the afternoon as your leisure doing as little or as much as you please. Relax at the lodge or explore local exhibits at the Volcano Garden Arts.
At night, we enjoy dinner at the hotel restaurant at Kilauea Lodge.
TWO BIKING OPTIONS: Level 2, Approx 27km (17 miles), Elevation Gain: 213m (700 ft) Level 3, Approx 48km (30 miles), Elevation Gain: 304m (1000 ft)
After having breakfast, we bike down the eastern side of the island to explore the lava flows of recent eruptions. Moving along one of the island's most picturesque routes, we encounter jaw-dropping black lava cliffs, sweeping forests, and charming beaches. Take in the tropical landscape of rocky cliffs, radiantly colored flowers, and fragrant guava trees as you move along narrow, quiet roads, nostalgic of Old Hawaii.
As we shuttle back in the afternoon, we are blessed with views of the Big Island's largest mountains, a wide expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Look out for the sacred summit of Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in the world (when measured from the ocean floor).
We shuttle to the Fairmont Orchid, our home for the next three nights, which is a luxurious 32-acre, 5-star resort with amazing amenities. Settle into your room, take a dip in the ocean, head to the pool, or perhaps indulge in a treatment at the hotel's Spa Without Walls.
In the evening, we enjoy dinner at a nearby restaurant.
Level 1, Approx 3km (2 miles), Elevation Gain: 30m (100 ft)
Today, we kayak, if the weather permits, and are presented with the opportunity to observe Hawaii's amazing marine life and landforms from a different viewpoint. After breakfast, we shuttle to Puako Bay where two-person kayaks await.
Our expert guides give a brief demonstration of basic kayaking techniques and safety, after that, we head out to explore the immaculate coastline of Puako Bay, where colourful coral reefs and underwater lava formations house turtles and spinner dolphins. Between December and May, you may be lucky enough to spot a humpback whale breaching onto the surface of the water— these calm giants migrate to warm Hawaiian waters during this period.
Halfway through our paddle, we stop along the serene oceanfront to snack and snorkel in the clear water. Among the colorful fish going in and out of the coral reef, keep an eye out for parrotfish, Moorish idol, butterflyfish, Hawaiian honu (sea turtle), moray eel, or manta ray.
Getting back on land, we will enjoy a delicious local lunch accompanied by stunning vistas of the Pacific. You'll get a chance to explore an ancient petroglyph field, carved into the lava rock several centuries ago. You'll find 3,000 ancient Hawaiian images, the largest collection in the Pacific. Watch out for paddlers, dancers, and turtles! Enjoy a short walk back to the Fairmont Orchid.
Enjoy the afternoon spending time by the pool or on the beach, trying out a stand-up paddleboard, or snorkeling the serene lagoon. Or venture further in the activities offered by Fairmont such as a sunset tour to Mauna Kea, horseback riding, a helicopter tour, or golf. Those seeking to be pampered can indulge in a soothing massage at the spa. (Additional activities and spa appointments are at own expense.)
Tonight, relish into a little exploring on your own and enjoy dinner on the Kohala Coast where your leaders are happy to give you recommendations.

If you are a morning person, you can rise early to hit the water for sunrise, in a traditional outrigger canoe. Learn a little history about the ancient Hawaiians who regarded the shoreline as their home, and the legends they handed down through generations. After breakfast at the hotel, we shuttle North, for a spin along the Kohala Coast, the famed birthplace and home of King Kamehameha, Hawaii's first monarch.
The Kohala Coast is known for many wonderful things such as its artists' communities, and being a part of the 112-mile cycling course of the Kona Ironman. You'll get a feel of the experience of competitors as you bike a section of the triathlon route.

There are only two seasons in Hawaii: summer and winter. Summer is usually from May to October, and winter is usually from November to April. However, you’ll find that temperatures on the islands have more to do with location than with the time of year, especially on the Big Island, where there are several microclimates.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, at an elevation of 4,000 feet, experiences relatively cool temperatures—be sure to pack an extra layer of clothing for use during our time here. Please note that wind sweeping across Mauna Loa can create conditions ranging from breezy to downright blustery! You’ll likely encounter fierce wind at some point during your trip, which can make bicycling more challenging. Our trip begins and ends on the island’s drier west side, where sunshine is the norm. On the Hilo, or tropical, side of the island, as well as up near the volcanoes, rain is always possible. Hawaii’s humidity causes you to perspire more and also prevents laundry from drying quickly, so we recommend that you bring a few extra T-shirts, socks and underclothes. Items made from synthetic moisture wicking materials are ideal.
