Our journey begins as we depart Melbourne at 7:30am (meeting point: National Gallery of Victoria) and head northwest to the charming village of Mt Macedon. Here, we'll stop for a morning tea break, giving you the chance to enjoy local baked treats and recharge before continuing to Hanging Rock. Once we arrive, we'll take the summit track to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views. You'll also have time to explore the discovery center and delve into the history of the Hanging Rock Reserve.
From Hanging Rock, we continue north to Chewton, where we'll step back in time to explore the area's rich gold mining heritage. Walking along old water race tracks, you'll discover remnants and ruins from the gold rush era. These peaceful strolls through the dry eucalypt landscape introduce you to the Goldfields track. As you wander through what was once a thriving mining village, your knowledgeable guides will share stories, point out relics, and bring history to life.
We end the day in Daylesford, where you'll settle into cozy accommodations for the next three nights. The evening concludes with a delicious two-course meal, lovingly prepared by your guides—a well-earned reward after a day of exploration.

Our journey begins at Hepburn Springs, where a scenic and invigorating 5km walk awaits. Following part of the historic Dry Diggings Trail, we'll explore the region's rich gold rush past as we make our way towards our first highlight—the famous Chocolate Mill, known for its handcrafted chocolates and eco-friendly practices. While we save the chocolate indulgence for later, the visit sets the tone for a day full of unique discoveries.
Next, we head to the charming historic town of Fryerstown, where time seems to stand still. Wander through its fascinating streets, dotted with heritage-listed buildings, including the Burke and Wills Mechanics Institute, dating back to 1863. From here, we’ll lace up our boots for a walk to Spring Gully, reconnecting with the Dry Diggings Trail as we traverse picturesque farmland and the breathtaking box-ironbark forest. Along the way, you'll uncover relics of the gold mining era, including gullies, sluices, and abandoned mine shafts, all telling stories of the region’s glittering past.
After reuniting with our transport at Spring Gully, our journey continues to Guildford, a small town brimming with cultural and historical significance. Here, we’ll pause to learn about the rich Indigenous heritage of the area, guided by the stories of the Dja Dja Wurrung Aboriginal people, the traditional custodians of the land. While enjoying your packed lunch, marvel at the magnificent ancient River Red Gum, estimated to be nearly 1,000 years old and celebrated as a tree of State significance on the National Trust Register—a striking reminder of the deep connection between people and place.
The day’s adventure doesn’t stop there! In the afternoon, we head north to Castlemaine, a town renowned for its creative spirit and artisanal culture. At the vibrant Mill Precinct, housed in the historic Castlemaine Woolen Mills (established in 1875), you’ll find a thriving hub of artisans, vintage shops, boutique food and wine producers, and a one-of-a-kind Austrian coffee house. Today begins in the heart of Daylesford, a town renowned for its mineral springs, day spas, and charming atmosphere. From here, we head to the iconic Convent Gallery, a must-see destination steeped in history and creativity. Originally the Holy Cross Convent and home to the Presentation Sisters, this historic site has been transformed into a vibrant cultural hub since its establishment in 1991. The Convent Gallery now boasts a variety of art exhibitions, stylish bars, elegant reception spaces, a museum, lush gardens, a boutique gift shop, and a delightful café. You’ll have time this morning to explore its treasures at your own pace, soaking in the art, architecture, and serene surroundings.
Next, our journey takes us to the quaint town of Lyonville, a hidden gem in the Daylesford-Macedon region. Here, we begin a 6km walk along the picturesque Domino Rail Trail, a route steeped in natural beauty and history. This trail, part of a Special Protection Zone, winds through a habitat for the endangered Powerful Owl, offering an extraordinary opportunity to connect with nature. Following the path of the former Trentham railway line, the trail recalls an era when this route played a vital role in transporting goods, livestock, and timber across the region.
Our walk leads us to the charming village of Trentham, known for its welcoming community and culinary delights. Here, we arrive at the legendary RedBeard Historic Bakery, a living piece of history that’s sure to captivate food lovers and history buffs alike. The bakery’s original wood-fired Scotch oven, weighing an astonishing 75 tonnes, has been in operation since 1891, producing up to 600 loaves in a single firing. Since 2005, RedBeard has been crafting award-winning sourdough bread using traditional methods that celebrate the art of baking. Through the observatory window, you can witness the bakers at work, bringing history to life with every loaf.
Indulge in a delicious afternoon tea featuring one of RedBeard’s mouthwatering baked goods, the perfect way to end your journey on a high note. Before we head back to Melbourne, take a moment to soak in the village’s charm, perhaps visiting local shops or simply enjoying the tranquil atmosphere of this idyllic destination.

Daylesford generally has a cooler climate than Melbourne, with the oceanic climate prevailing. From January until March and November and December, experience a pleasant temperature and limited rainfall. The highest average temperature is 26°C in January and the lowest is 10°C in July with average falling between 20°C- 25°C. May is the most wet month.
- Accommodation: The Manor House, Daylesford, is an 8 bedroom and 8 ensuite bathroom property. This magnificent, vast home was purposely built giving consideration to both privacy and group stays. There is ducted heating, a double-sided wood fire place, ceiling fans and split system air-conditioning. Guides prepare group meals in the kitchen and group dining is around a large bespoke table in the main dining room inside or in the large outdoor barbecue and dining area. All linen and some toiletries are provided at this lovely accommodation. A single supplement is available for an extra $320 per person.
