historic viaducts, and potential encounters with endangered New Zealand wildlife infuse this pure Middle-earth experience. This moderate to hard walk will definitely delight wilderness lovers and challenge the seasoned hiker.
South Island's dramatic southern extremity has an ‘edge of the world' quality. Hump Ridge track is a wilderness treasure set in a bizarre sculptured landscape of house-sized rock tors, icy alpine tarns and weird limestone formations. Walking the Hump Ridge Track is a life-changing experience. The physical exertion will challenge but the rewards will take your breath away.
You'll enjoy a short helicopter flight to take you across Te Waewae Bay and heli-pack your pack (max 15kg) up the hill on Day 1. Wooden boardwalks ease your passage on the climb to the Hump Ridge. At 1000m, you feel ‘on top of the world’. The summit has a Lord of the Rings atmosphere and offers panoramic views of southern Fiordland and Stewart Island.
The next day is a steep descent following to a fascinating coastline where you trek along an old logging tramway that crosses mighty viaducts, including Percy Burn, the largest surviving wooden trestle bridge in the world.
The final section is a pleasant ramble along marine terraces clothed in some of the last remaining virgin beech in Waitutu Forest.
The walk is led by highly knowledgeable and experienced guides. Along the way your experienced local guide will bring to life the diversity of the landscape, vegetation, wildlife and captivating stories of historic viaducts and early pioneering families. At every stage your tour will be enhanced by the knowledge and passion of the field guides who work tirelessly to ensure each guest is safe, engaged and well fed.
At the end of each day, you'll return to your cosy backcountry lodges in superb locations, and enjoy 3 courses dinners.
Adventure into the harsh but spellbindingly beautiful surrounds of the South Island’s Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track. This challenging and incredibly rewarding experience will be an adventure you remember forever.
