Saudi Arabia is characterised by a desert climate, with the exception of the southwestern part of the country, which exhibits a semi-arid climate. Summers in the central region are extremely hot and dry, ranging from 27°C to 43°C in the inland areas and 27°C to 38°C in coastal areas. Think of maximum temperatures that average between 40 and 46 degrees Celsius (104 - 114°F) in June, July and August. Even at night it is still very hot with minima that are somewhere around 30°C (86°F). The south has more moderate temperatures, which can go as low as 10 degrees Celsius (50°F) during summer at night. In winter the temperatures are more moderate during the day, but turning cold at night sometimes descending below freezing.
