The Ascent from the Village in the Mist

The trail begins in Takahara, a settlement known as "Kiri-no-Sato," or the Village in the Mist, due to the frequent morning fog that fills the valley below. Takahara is located on a mountainside, offering clear views of the surrounding landscape.

From the centre of Takahara, follow the Kumano Kodo signposts. The trail initially passes between houses and terraced rice fields before entering the forest. The path then begins a steady ascent.

Through Sacred Forests and Historic Passes

After approximately 90 minutes of walking, the trail reaches the Jujo-oji clearing. This area is the former site of an Oji shrine and serves as a suitable rest stop.

Continuing on, the path climbs to the highest point of this section, the site of the former Uwada-jaya Teahouse, at an elevation of about 690 meters (2,263 feet). This spot was historically a rest area for pilgrims before they started their descent. From this high point, the trail descends toward the Three-Fold Moon Viewing area, a location mentioned in local folklore associated with a mountain ascetic.

Statues, Legends, and the Final Descent

The trail crosses Highway #311 near the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi Michi-no-Eki rest area. A short climb from here leads to the Hashiori-toge Pass.

At the pass, there are several historical monuments. These include the Gyuba-doji statue, which depicts the child-emperor Kazan (968–1008) on a horse and a cow, commemorating an early imperial pilgrimage. Nearby is a stone carving of Ennogyoja, the founder of the Shugendo religion, and a Hokyoin-to stupa from the 12th century.

From the pass, a 10-minute descent leads into the valley and the village of Chikatsuyu. After crossing the bridge, you will arrive at Chikatsuyu-oji, a shrine that marks the end of this section of the pilgrimage route. Public facilities, including toilets, vending machines, and a bus stop, are available in the village.
