Your leader will be delighted to recommend some of the finest local restaurants, where you can sample exquisite Uzbek cuisine and begin your exploration of this historic and captivating country.

As evening descends, retire to the Central Palace Hotel in the heart of Tashkent, a sanctuary of comfort just moments from the city's vibrant attractions. Unwind from your day of exploration with a visit to the serene spa and wellness centre, or take a refreshing dip in the elegant indoor pool before savouring local dishes at the hotel’s restaurant.

This morning, you will embark on a train journey to the fabled city of Bukhara. Situated on the ancient Silk Road, this city was once a monumental hub for trade, culture, and religion, its long history marked by invasions from Genghis Khan and the Soviet Red Army. Upon arrival and after checking into your hotel, you will join a guided walking tour to uncover the architectural marvels of the historic town centre.

Your exploration begins at the Ark of Bukhara, a massive and imposing fortress first occupied in the 5th century. This royal city-within-a-city served as the residence of Bukhara's emirs for centuries until it was heavily damaged by Red Army bombing in 1920. You will then visit the Bolo Hauz Mosque, renowned for its exquisitely carved wooden pillars and ornate ceiling, a breathtaking example of traditional craftsmanship. Your tour continues to the Ismail Samani Mausoleum, a 10th-century architectural masterpiece and the resting place of the founder of the Samanid dynasty. It is believed this shrine survived Genghis Khan's devastating invasion because it was partially buried by a flood, only to be rediscovered and excavated in the 20th century. Today, it stands as a sacred site, revered by pilgrims and local residents alike.

Your journey continues at the iconic Poi Kalyan complex, where you will marvel at the grandeur of the Kalon Minaret, an 11th-century brick tower that has guided caravans for centuries. Adjacent to it lies the Kalon Mosque, a vast congregational mosque capable of holding 12,000 people. You will then proceed to the heart of old Bukhara, the Lyabi-Hauz Plaza. Today, your journey continues from Bukhara to the ancient town of Gijduvan, long celebrated as a vital center for crafts and trade. Here, you are invited to visit the renowned ceramic workshop of Abdulla and Alisher Narzullaev, a family of sixth-generation artisans whose beautiful creations continue a proud local legacy. From Gijduvan, you will travel onward to Nurata, a place steeped in history with archaeological remains suggesting it was inhabited thousands of years ago. It is here that Alexander the Great erected the formidable Nur Fortress in the 4th century BC, and you will have the opportunity to wander among its ancient ruins.

Your adventure then leads you into the vast expanse of the Kyzylkum Desert. As dusk begins to settle, you will arrive at a traditional yurt camp, your home for the evening. Experience the timeless allure of desert life as you gather around a glowing campfire for dinner, dining beneath a boundless sky glittering with thousands of stars.

Sleeping arrangements tonight are on a multi-share basis with mattresses on the floor, potentially mixed gender sharing depending on the group composition. Typically, there will be up to four people in one yurt. It can get very chilly in the evenings. For heating, there's a stove for heating and plenty of blankets. Bathroom facilities are located separately from the yurts and are shared on the camp. The conditions here are basic but the views and experience of staying in a yurt is certainly rewarding.

Today, your journey takes you into the heart of the Nuratau Mountains to a traditional Tajik village. These secluded villages are nestled among rolling green hills, where shaded paths meander between classic stone houses. The region thrives as a lush oasis, irrigated by ancient water channels that nourish local crops and orchards. You have the day to explore this tranquil landscape. You might choose to hike to a hidden waterfall, discover ancient petroglyphs carved into the rocks, or try to spot the rare, endemic argali mountain sheep.

This evening, you are invited into a local home for an immersive cultural experience. Your host family will welcome you and share their traditions, teaching you how to bake traditional Uzbek bread in a tandir, a classic clay oven. Later, you will learn the secrets to preparing plov, Uzbekistan's cherished national dish, a hearty one-pot meal of rice, onions, carrots, and meat. As you enjoy the delicious meal you helped create, you’ll have the chance to learn more about the rhythms and customs of village life.

Because we stay at real people's homes, beds might be pull-out couches or mattresses on the floor, or even a yurt in their backyard. Some facilities are shared and some accommodation has cold water only.

Today, you will journey to Samarkand to behold one of Central Asia's most iconic landmarks: the magnificent Registan Square. This grand public square, framed by three ornate and historically significant madrasas, was once the vibrant heart of the ancient city. Imagine standing where royal decrees were announced and public spectacles unfolded as you take in the breathtaking scale of its architecture.

Your exploration continues at the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, the final resting place of Timur, the formidable founder of the Timurid dynasty. This architectural masterpiece is not only a site of historical importance but also one shrouded in legend. It is said that in 1941, a Soviet anthropologist opened the crypt and discovered an inscription on Timur's tomb that read, "Whoever opens my tomb shall unleash an invader more terrible than I." The very next day, Hitler launched an invasion of the Soviet Union.

Commissioned by Timur's beloved wife, Bibi Khanym, its grand scale and ambitious design were intended to rival all other structures of its time.

Following these visits, you will have the afternoon to discover more of this fabled Silk Road city at your own pace. You might choose to delve into the scientific history of the region at Ulugbek's Observatory, once a leading centre of astronomical study. Alternatively, you could visit the Tomb of Daniel, a holy site revered by Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike, or explore the ancient city's origins at the Afrosiab Museum. For a more sensory experience, consider a stroll through the bustling Siyob Bazaar, where you can browse stalls brimming with fresh local produce, aromatic spices, and unique regional handicrafts.

Your tour will then lead you to Amir Timur Square, a grand public space dedicated to the formidable 14th-century conqueror. Here, you can admire the imposing equestrian statue of Timur and the surrounding architecture. Afterward, immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of the Chorsu Bazaar.
