Your journey commences in Dushanbe, the vibrant capital and cultural heart of Tajikistan. Nestled along the tranquil Varzob River and framed by the dramatic foothills of the Hissar Range, the city offers a captivating introduction to the country.
As most international flights arrive late in the evening or in the early hours of Day 2, we highly recommend booking pre-tour accommodation to ensure you are well-rested and ready to explore. If you wish to have more time to discover Dushanbe's broad, tree-lined avenues, neoclassical architecture, and bustling bazaars, you can arrange pre-tour hotel nights to extend your stay, please contact us
Immerse yourself in unparalleled luxury at The Rumi Hotel & Residences, an oasis of tranquility and modern elegance in the heart of Dushanbe. Unwind after your travels in the serene spa and wellness center, take a refreshing dip in the indoor swimming pool, or savor exquisite culinary creations at the hotel's sophisticated restaurant.
At 9 a.m., you will meet your tour leader for a welcome briefing, after which your exploration of Dushanbe begins. Our day is dedicated to understanding how this vibrant city reflects the rich history, enduring culture, and profound national pride of Tajikistan.
Our first stop is the impressive Ismail Somoni monument, a tribute to the revered ninth-century founder of the Tajik state, whose legacy laid the groundwork for the nation. Nearby, we will admire the statue of Rudaki, celebrated as the father of Persian-Tajik literature and a key figure in the region's cultural heritage. We will also pause at the National Flagpole which, at the time of its construction, was the tallest free-standing flagpole in the world. Our historical journey continues at the National Museum of Antiquities. Here, you will encounter fascinating artefacts, including the magnificent 13-metre-long reclining Buddha rescued from an ancient monastery, and the intriguing skeleton of the 'Sogdian Princess' discovered at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Sarazm.
For lunch, we will gather at a local restaurant to savour classic Tajik dishes, offering a first taste of the delightful culinary experiences that await you throughout our journey. Later in the afternoon, we visit Kokhi Navruz, a breathtaking palace and cultural centre. Originally planned as a teahouse, its grandeur expanded into a showcase of Tajik artistry, with its intricately carved ceilings and opulently ornamented halls revealing the exceptional skills still practised by artisans across the country.
The rest of the afternoon is yours to relax and absorb the day's discoveries before we meet for dinner. In the evening, we will enjoy a gentle walk, stretching our legs as we pass the stately Ayni Opera and Ballet Theatre and stroll through Kurushi Kabir Park. We will continue along the bustling Rudaki Avenue, where elegant fountains and inviting public spaces come alive with the vibrant energy of local life as residents enjoy the cool evening air.
After breakfast, we depart Dushanbe for a short 45-minute drive to Hisor Fortress, a formidable stronghold that once stood as a key bastion on the ancient Silk Road. As we explore the impressive, partially reconstructed gates and walls, our tour leader will bring the fortress's rich history to life, narrating tales of emirs, conquests, and the shifting tides of power over centuries.
We then return to Dushanbe for lunch before embarking on a breathtaking four-hour scenic drive into the heart of the Fann Mountains. The road winds its way upwards, following rushing river valleys and passing through high pastures where shepherds tend their flocks. Our destination is the magnificent Iskandarkul, a serene turquoise lake named after Alexander the Great, whose legend is deeply woven into the fabric of local folklore. Upon arrival, you may choose to take a refreshing dip in its pristine waters or simply relax on the shores, absorbing the tranquility of this alpine jewel.
Once settled into our charming lakeside accommodation, we will explore the surroundings on foot. A short walk brings us to a cascading waterfall, affectionately known by locals as "Fann Niagara," before we continue to the secluded Snake Lake, a smaller alpine pool fed by clear mountain streams.
For those who wish, an optional boat ride offers a unique perspective of the lake's grandeur. As evening descends, we will gather for dinner by the water, watching as the fading light paints the surrounding peaks in hues of gold and purple.
Nestled by the tranquil shores of Iskandarkul, our accommodation for the night is the Zumrad Camp, an ex-Soviet holiday retreat offering simple yet comfortable lodging amidst breathtaking lake and mountain vistas. Here, you'll be enveloped in the serene beauty of the Fann Mountains, a perfect base from which to immerse yourself in the region's natural splendour.
After bidding farewell to the tranquil beauty of Iskanderkul, our journey continues as we travel for 2 hours through breathtaking mountain passes towards the village of Saratog. Along the way, we will pause at Panjchashma, a site revered for its ‘five springs’. Local tradition holds that the waters from each spring possess unique healing properties, offering remedies for different ailments of the body.
Upon arriving in Saratog, we will immerse ourselves in the gentle rhythm of village life. A leisurely walk through the community offers a chance to meet the residents, people whose existence is deeply intertwined with the surrounding valleys and a more traditional way of life. Later, we embark on a gentle riverside hike through the picturesque Arg Valley. The route, which is largely flat and includes a bridge crossing, allows ample time to absorb the serene landscapes and the quiet beauty of the region.
Continuing our journey west, a 3-hour drive brings us to the ancient city of Panjakent. Often referred to as the "Pompeii of Central Asia," this historically significant site was a major city on the Silk Road, and its ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era. For lunch, you will be introduced to a local culinary specialty, Panjakent plov, a distinct regional variation of Central Asia’s most celebrated rice dish.
Later, we have the privilege of meeting with local artisans for a masterclass in suzani embroidery. Panjakent was recently recognised as a World Craft City for this intricate textile art, a tradition passed down through generations. Our hosts will explain the traditional techniques, such as dolduzi, bosmaduzi, and zanjiraduzi, and share how the intricate patterns, vibrant colours, and distinct stitches all serve to reflect local identity and stories.
Depending on our schedule, you may also have the opportunity to join an optional halva-making session, where you can learn about the creation of this popular and delicious nutty-sweet confection.
Today, our journey takes us into the heart of the Fann Mountains to Voru, a village renowned for its dramatic, terraced architecture. The houses here are ingeniously stacked into the mountainside, a design where one family’s roof serves as the courtyard for the family above. This unique layout is not just a practical solution to the valley's limited space, but also a living testament to the strong community bonds that define village life.
Our scenic drive to the river crossing, approximately two and a half hours with stops for photography, precedes a memorable hike. The trail to Voru village is a 4-hour round trip, covering about six miles (9.5km) through the stunning mountain landscape. Upon arrival in Voru, we will be welcomed into a village home to share tea on a rooftop terrace, offering breathtaking panoramic views across the valley. We will also have the privilege of visiting the workshop of Master Sulton, a local blacksmith whose family has practiced this vital trade for generations. You'll observe how his tools and traditional methods, largely unchanged over time, are still used to create essential items for the local community as well as small, handmade souvenirs.
On our return journey, we will stop in the village of Zimtut for a hosted lunch. A local family will welcome us into their home to share a delicious, freshly prepared meal, offering an authentic taste of regional hospitality.
Back in Panjakent, our exploration continues with a visit to the ruins of Old Panjakent, the ancient city that thrived centuries ago, and the Historical Museum, which houses many of the treasures unearthed from the site. To conclude our day, we will enjoy an intimate dinner with a local family in their home, a perfect opportunity to share stories and experience everyday life in this historic city.
Today, we set out early for the scenic drive to the Seven Lakes of Marguzor, a breathtaking chain of mountain lakes, each with its own unique colour and character. Local legend tells that the lakes were formed from the tears of seven sisters mourning their lost father.
Our journey begins at Mizhgon and winds its way up to Marghuzor, the sixth and largest lake, where we will stop for lunch amidst the stunning scenery. Afterwards, you will have the choice to either drive or enjoy a pleasant walk to Hazorchashma, the highest and most remote of the seven lakes. Along the way, we'll observe how the unique mineral content, depth, and reflection of light give each lake its distinct, vibrant hue, from turquoise to deep indigo.
In the afternoon, we begin our return journey towards Panjakent, making an important stop at the archaeological site of Sarazm, the first location in Tajikistan to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Dating back to the 4th millennium BCE, this ancient town provides a fascinating glimpse into one of Central Asia's earliest urban settlements, revealing sophisticated town planning and evidence of trade networks that stretched as far as the Indus Valley.
By mid-afternoon, we will arrive at the Jarteppa border crossing. Here, we will bid farewell to our Tajik guide and, after completing the necessary border formalities, meet our new Uzbek tour leader. A short drive will bring us to the legendary Silk Road city of Samarkand. We'll conclude our day with a delightful dinner hosted by a local family, offering a warm and welcoming introduction to the celebrated hospitality and rich flavours of Uzbek cuisine.
You’ll stay at the charming Asia Samarkand, where a tranquil spa and swimming pool await to soothe your senses after a day of exploration. Situated just moments from the fabled Registan Square, the hotel offers a seamless blend of modern luxury and timeless tradition, providing the perfect sanctuary from which to discover the city's ancient wonders.
Today, we delve into the heart of the legendary Silk Road as we explore Samarkand, a city whose very name conjures images of ancient caravans and majestic empires. Our journey through this fabled metropolis reveals how centuries of power, scholarship, and commerce are immortalised in its breathtaking architecture.
Our first stop is the grandiose Bibi Khanum Mosque, a colossal structure commissioned by Tamerlane's wife after his victorious campaign in India. Its towering turquoise domes and monumental portal were intended to be the jewel of his empire, a testament to his ambition and might. We will then proceed to the magnificent Gur-Emir mausoleum, a site of immense historical significance. Here, beneath an exquisite fluted dome, rest the remains of Tamerlane himself, along with his sons and his learned grandson, Ulugbek, the great astronomer-king.
As the late afternoon unfolds, you will have the freedom to immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of a local bazaar. Wander through stalls piled high with fragrant spices, colourful silks, and intricate handicrafts, where the centuries-old traditions of trade and artistry remain the lifeblood of Samarkand's economy. Should you wish, you may also choose to indulge in an optional wine tasting at the historic Khovrenko Winery, which includes a fascinating visit to its cellars followed by a degustation of local vintages.
As evening descends, we will gather for a truly magical experience at Registan Square. This iconic ensemble, featuring three grand and intricately decorated madrasahs, forms the sublime centerpiece of the city. We will witness this architectural masterpiece as it becomes illuminated after dark, a spellbinding sight that truly captures the enduring spirit of Samarkand.
Our journey continues as we travel by road towards the fabled city of Bukhara. Along the way, we will pause to explore the evocative ruins of Rabat-i-Malik, a once-grand caravanserai that offered refuge to merchants and travellers along the ancient Silk Road. Here, amidst the remnants of its monumental portal, you can imagine the caravans that once passed through this vital outpost.
Our next stop is the town of Gijduvan, long renowned for its distinctive school of ceramics. We are invited into the workshop of a master potter, where we will have the privilege of seeing how traditional techniques and intricate patterns have been meticulously passed down through generations.
For lunch, we will be warmly hosted by the potter and their family, offering an intimate glimpse into the living traditions of Uzbek hospitality and craftsmanship. After this memorable encounter, we will complete the final leg of our journey, arriving in the magnificent Silk Road city of Bukhara in the mid-afternoon, with the remainder of the day at your leisure to settle in and anticipate the discoveries to come.
As twilight descends upon Bukhara, the Iman Hotel awaits to envelop you in its embrace, a charming sanctuary nestled within the old city, just moments from the historic Lyabi-Hauz complex. Here, you can unwind with a refreshing dip in the outdoor swimming pool or find solace in the traditional courtyard, all while surrounded by the rich tapestry of Uzbek design and hospitality.
For over a thousand years, the old city of Bukhara has been a revered centre of learning, faith, and culture. Our guided walk today introduces you to its most significant historical treasures, beginning with the Ismail Samani Mausoleum. Considered a masterpiece of 10th-century Islamic architecture, its intricate baked-terracotta brickwork creates an elegant and timeless design that has stood for centuries.
We will then proceed to Chashma-i-Ayub, or "Job's Spring," a sacred site where the prophet Job is said to have struck the ground with his staff, creating a well of pure water. Afterwards, we visit the beautiful Bolo-Hauz complex, a mosque famed for its ornate wooden columns and reflective pool, where the emirs of Bukhara once came for their daily prayers. Our journey through the city’s past continues at the imposing Ark Fortress, the ancient, walled city-within-a-city that served as the seat of power for rulers for centuries. Here, our tour leader will recount tales of the emirs who governed from behind its formidable ramparts.
At the heart of the city lies the magnificent Poi-Kalyan Ensemble. We will stand in awe of the soaring Kalon Minaret, which has guided caravans to the city for centuries, explore the vast courtyard of the Kalon Mosque, and admire the stunning tilework of the Miri-Arab Madrasa, which continues its legacy as an active Islamic college.
The afternoon is then yours to explore this enchanting city at your own pace. You may wish to lose yourself in the labyrinthine alleys of the old town, bargain for silks and spices in the trading domes, or simply relax with a cup of tea, soaking in the timeless atmosphere of this Silk Road jewel.
Today, we delve deeper into the wonders of Bukhara, beginning with a visit to the Lyabi-Hauz complex. Here, we'll admire the Kukeldash Madrasa and the Nadir Devonbegi Madrasa, along with its associated khanaqa (a lodge for Sufi pilgrims) and the tranquil pond that once served as the social heart of the city. Our journey through time continues at the Magok-i-Attari Mosque, one of the oldest and most sacred sites in Bukhara, whose origins stretch back to the pre-Islamic era. Later, we will wander through the historic trading domes, their domed ceilings arching over bustling lanes that are still active today. Each dome once housed a specific guild, from money changers to hat makers, and we'll have the chance to browse the vibrant stalls for unique crafts and textiles.
This evening, we are warmly welcomed into the home of the Toshev family, renowned local artisans specializing in the traditional craft of puppet-making. Over a delightful home-cooked dinner, they will share stories of their heritage and artistic traditions. It's a perfect opportunity to connect with local life and celebrate our shared adventure through Central Asia.
