Welcome to Sri Lanka! We whisk you from the bustle of Colombo to the city’s colonial-era Fort Station. From here, it’s all aboard the hill-country express, a train ride that’s equal parts Wes Anderson whimsy and wildlife docu-drama. Cue window-side vistas of emerald tea estates, misty mountains, and the kind of jungle scenes that will have you half-expecting a monkey to board at the next stop — it’s three to four hours of awe.
By lunchtime, we pedal into Kandy, where you meet other people you’ll be travelling with. We saddle up for a leg-stretching spin from the station into town, ducking off the main roads and onto quieter paths that trace the river and snake through sleepy villages. It’s your first real taste of Sri Lanka — earthy, scenic, and surprisingly breezy (in a good way).
This evening, after cycling, we swap bikes for bare feet at the Temple of the Tooth—a gorgeous shrine that houses one very famous molar (yes, an actual tooth). Spend time wandering through gold-lit halls and storytelling murals that bring centuries of Buddhist history to life. After this visit, head to your lodging for tonight, the Radisson Kandy hotel, a 4-star upscale hotel majestically occupying the heart of the country's hill capital and overlooking Kandy Lake.
Tonight, an included dinner at a local joint gives us the chance to get to know the group better. We learn each other's names (maybe, again). Then it’s time to kick off your trainers and surrender to slum.
Approx. 26 km (16 miles), 1-2 hours biking
Enjoy a refreshing cup of coffee before we head out. We hit the back roads early and begin climbing straight out the gate, swapping city buzz for birdsong and fresh mountain air. As the traffic thins, the tea creeps in — neat rows of emerald-green bushes blanketing the slopes like a botanical patchwork quilt.
We cycle through plantation country, with the occasional roadside stall tempting us to stop for sweet dates, salty corn crackers, or whatever tasty surprise is fresh off the wok that morning.
Expect a bit of everything under the tire today, from silky smooth stretches to charming rustic roads, all blissfully light on traffic and heavy on panoramas. Just when your legs start to give out, the downhill comes to the rescue, and we coast our way toward Gampola station.
Here, we hop on a train heading deeper into the hills. The ride is a show-stealer — we roll past waterfalls, misty valleys, and scenery so breathtaking it feels like someone turned the saturation up to eleven.
We jump off at Nanu Oya and take a short drive to Nuwara Eliya, aka ‘Little England,’ where the air is crisp, the architecture charming, and yes, you’ll want that extra layer. But it’ll be worth it as we arrive at our accommodation. It is the historic 5-star luxury Jetwing St. Andrew’s, with a crackling fireplace, picturesque dining areas and a mouthwatering dinner menu featuring global gourmet options and authentic Sri Lankan cuisine.
Approx. 28 km (17 miles), 1-2 hours biking
We’re dedicating today to the tea country. This morning, we pedal downhill before the road begins tilting upwards. Keep your eyes peeled for a postcard-perfect scene: brightly dressed pickers with baskets secured to their heads, pluck the tender top leaves from neatly manicured bushes. It’s slow, skilled work — and the image of every brew you’ll sip today onward.
We crest a ridgeline and cruise into Ambewela, a high-altitude haven better known for its cows than its cuppas. This is Sri Lanka’s dairy capital, and if time’s on our side, we swing by a farm for a peek behind the scenes. After this visit, we move to observe strawberry fields, if time permits. This area grows some of the juiciest berries around—perfect with local cream or straight from the punnet.
Wave goodbye, before we move to observe strawberries, if time permits. This pocket of island grows some of the juiciest berries around — perfect with a dollop of local cream or just scoffed straight from the punnet.
Following lunch, we take a deep dive into the island’s most iconic brew. At a working tea factory nestled in the hills, we follow the journey from fresh-picked leaf to final sip. See all the whirring, withering, rolling, and roasting that make tea. This experience leaves you feeling a newfound appreciation for your daily brew—and possibly a suitcase full of souvenirs.
Come evening, unwind by the fireplace, enjoying some alone time with a velvety glass of red, or maybe a game of Rummy.
Approx. 41 km (25 miles), 2-3 hours biking
We’re off before sunrise, trading pillows for panoramic views as we drive to Horton Plains National Park with coffee and snacks to go.
We lace up for a brisk walk through the park’s lush highlands and misty cloud forests, heading straight for the jaw-dropping World’s End. This dramatic clifftop lookout lives up to its name — with sheer drops and sweeping valley views. (Be on the lookout for sambar deer and cheeky monkeys)
Back at the trailhead, we dig into a local breakfast of freshly flipped roti and punchy sambal, washed down with a hot cup of Sri Lanka’s finest. Then it's time to saddle up for one of the most thrilling rides of the trip.
We start at 2,100 metres (6,890 feet) and freewheel into what might just be cycling nirvana; a rollercoaster route that swoops and dips through cloud forest, eucalyptus groves, and striking cedar trees before easing us back into tea country. It’s not all downhill, but the scenery is so enchanting you might forget you’re pedaling.
We cruise into Melheim Haputale, our 3-star scenic mountain retreat, like the true explorers we are. This resort rewards you with enrapturing views of the surrounding forests and a tranquil environment. Dining under the stars is our mission for the evening — which coconutty, cinnamon-kissed or chilli-topped curry extravaganza will it be tonight?
Approx. 50 km (31 miles), 3-5 hours biking
Today, we experience Sri Lanka in all its glory! We head from the hazy highlands down to the sun-drenched southeast, exposed to beachy bliss (and possibly an elephant roadblock or two).
But first, a scenic drive that’s a slow-motion slideshow of picture-perfect views. We roll into Ella, a quirky little town where our bikes are waiting with open handlebars and oiled chains for a glorious ride. For lunch, we make a chill village stop where the pace slows, and the sun cranks up. Welcome to the laid-back southeast plains, where the only rush is the one to the ice cream truck.
After boarding the van, we head for a safari sandwich, squeezed between Yala and Lunugamvehera National Parks. Keep your eyes peeled for the elephants that love to play roadblock and occasionally demand their toll in bananas. (It’s the jungle out here!)
Mid-afternoon, we roll into our stunning 5-star luxury beachside resort, the Jetwing Yala, just on the outskirts of the Yala National Park. Time to kick back, sink your toes into the sand, and maybe sneak in a cheeky sundowner before dinner with a menu that satisfies whatever craving you may have. Seafood? Tapas? Asian fusion dishes? Expect all that and more.
Leopards or loungers? Game drive or beach time? The only hard part about today is choosing when to do what
Today is all about safari — but we let the local experts call the shots on whether we go out at dawn or wait for that golden afternoon light. This is because they’ve got their ears to the ground and know where the wildlife’s likely to show up, based on the season, weather, and animal antics.
Whichever way the jeeps roll, you’re in for around 2.5 to 3 hours of wild wonder. Think peacocks strutting like they own the place, elephants going about their business, and if luck’s on our side, a glimpse of Yala’s elusive superstar: the leopard. Our naturalist guide is no rookie either. He knows the park’s secret nooks and quieter corners, meaning fewer people and more intimate wildlife moments.
You have the rest of the day to dial things down. You could do a few laps in the 75-metre pool, or even just lounge under a palm tree. The hotel’s beachfront is lifeguard-patrolled (by Aussie-trained pros), so a safe ocean splash is always on the cards. As for food, enjoy all meals at the hotel today — no strict schedules, just good food when you want it. Spice up your plate with a Sri Lankan classic or give in to a Western craving.
Approx. 43 km (27 miles), 2-3 hours biking
Your last ride of the trip will be a good one. Helmets fastened, we ride inland and experience the hush of village lands through the Southern Province.
This is where Sri Lanka slows down. We glide past paddy fields and roadside shrines, breeze by smiley shopkeepers selling daily bits and bobs, and spot golden king coconuts piled high under palm-frond stalls. (They’re sweet, seriously refreshing, and may be slightly addictive. Don’t be surprised if you stop for more than one.)
We wrap things up in style at Wijaya Beach, a sandy little slice of heaven where sunsets glow, cold drinks flow, and the pizza is worth writing home about. Later, we cruise down the coast to our final stop: Galle. A city of historical colonial charm, salty sea air, and a deep love for one very loud, very competitive sport. (Hint: it involves wickets, white pants, and great national pride, and you’ll hear all about it, almost non-stop, tomorrow.) We then continue to our last accommodation on this trip, the Yara Galle Fort, a 4-star chic hotel situated within the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort and close to attractions including the Galle Fort Clock Tower and the Dutch Church Galle.
Tonight we convene for one last hurrah. We might be newfound friends, but when the plates hit the table, it’s every foodie for themselves.
We step back through centuries as we explore the old fort of Galle, where waves crash below centuries-old ramparts and history clings to every sun-bleached stone. First, the Portuguese showed up in the 1500s. Then came the Dutch, who got busy building bastions. And then, the British arrived, cups of tea in hand. Traverse the cobbled streets, and you’ll notice that it’s much more than just postcard pretty. This place is still home to families who have lived inside the fort for generations. Trade, travel, and time shaped this town, and our tour leader will bring it all to life as we walk and talk our way through this living, breathing museum by the sea.
After one last delicious lunch right inside the fort, we say our see-you-later. Our next stop is Colombo. The tour may be over, but the sights and snack cravings are coming home with you.

Sri Lanka enjoys a tropical climate characterised by distinct temperature zones rather than dramatic seasonal shifts. Across the coastal lowlands and major cities, you will encounter consistent, warm temperatures averaging between 27°C and 30°C throughout the year, typically accompanied by high humidity. As you journey inland toward the Central Highlands, the rising elevation provides a striking and refreshing contrast. In high-altitude regions such as Nuwara Eliya, the climate cools significantly, presenting daytime averages between 15°C and 20°C, with evenings often requiring an extra layer of clothing. While two primary monsoon patterns dictate the island's rainfall distribution, the overall temperature profile remains remarkably stable, ensuring a reliably comfortable environment for your year-round exploration.
