Sri Lanka enjoys a tropical climate characterized by warm temperatures and distinct wet and dry seasons. Generally, temperatures range from 26°C to 32°C (79°F to 89°F), with coastal areas being hotter and more humid, while the central highlands offer a cooler retreat. The climate is influenced by two main monsoon systems: the Southwest Monsoon (May to September), which brings heavy rains to the southwestern regions like Colombo and Galle, and the Northeast Monsoon (December to February), affecting the northern and eastern areas such as Jaffna and Trincomalee. Additionally, there are two inter-monsoon periods (October to November and March to April) with variable weather, including occasional thunderstorms and rain showers. Coastal areas experience consistent heat and humidity year-round, while the central highlands enjoy cooler, less humid conditions. For optimal travel conditions, visiting from December to March is generally recommended.
