Built to honour the Duke of Wellington’s victory over Napoleon, the monument offers a glimpse into the region’s proud military history. We’re accompanied by a local historian who brings stories about the wall to life as we walk along a beautifully preserved section of the trail. Explore the remarkable Housesteads Fort, one of the best-preserved Roman forts in Britain, and imagine life on the empire’s edge.
Savor a rustic pub lunch before our shuttle takes us to the serene village of Blanchland and our hotel for the next two nights. Our path winds through classic Northumberland countryside to a nearby hill farm, where we meet a local shepherd who gives us a sheepdog demonstration and shares how important these loyal friends are in the farming communities here.
Keep walking through open farmland and quiet country lanes to the village of Edmundbyers, where we stop for a signature picnic. You’re welcome to shuttle back to the hotel from here or continue on foot to the hamlet of Muggleswick, tucked along a peaceful stretch of trail. After a quick shuttle back to Blanchland, enjoy a guided walk around the village’s medieval center and listen to stories of monks, manor houses, and speculated Jacobite hideouts. From the entrance of the Kentmere Valley, our route leads into the winding hills above town, gaining elevation and opening to the sweeping views of the surrounding fells. Today, we explore one of the most treasured corners of the Lake District, an area that lies between the villages of Grasmere and Ambleside, set out on foot along quiet paths once explored by the poet William Wordsworth, who drew lifelong inspiration from this landscape, even calling it “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found.”
Our route takes us through woodland and rolling countryside, with a visit to Rydal Cave, a wide cavern carved into the hillside by slate miners in the 1800s. We finish in the market town of Ambleside, where we stop for a delicious picnic lunch. Take some time to explore the shops and cafes, perhaps picking up some gorgeously packaged Grasmere Gingerbread, locally made Herdwick wool socks, or a keepsake book by Wordsworth or Beatrix Potter.
This evening, we gather for a toast and sit down for a wonderful celebratory dinner filled with seasonal flavours.

We begin our final day with a shuttle to the shores of Lake Windermere, where we board a boat and journey across England’s largest natural lake. Glide past wooded shores and ancient homes en route to Wray Castle, an impressive 19th-century neo-Gothic estate. It was once a holiday retreat for Beatrix Potter and is now a fascinating site to explore.
We meet our local guide, who gives us an in-depth tour of Wray Castle grounds and insight into the literary inspiration of the area. After the tour, we return by boat across the lake to Bowness. Back at the Gilpin, we enjoy light refreshments of tea and scones whilst we say our goodbyes and reminisce on a fantastic week. A shuttle departs from the Gilpin at 12.30 pm for Liverpool.
