Travel: from Adelaide 6 hours
This morning you will be collected from Adelaide Central Bus Station at 9 am to arrive at Flinders and Beyond property by early afternoon. The first evening will be spent meeting with our team of camels and include a safety briefing. Swags will be provided and a swag tutorial given. Dinner will be prepared on the camp fire before bed.
In the morning breakfast will be laid out and swags rolled. The camels are loaded after breakfast and the trek departs. Loading for the first time on a trek appears hectic; loading times will decrease as everyone becomes more confident with the camels and gear. Assistance will be required with the loading and unloading of the camels each day, we only ask that each person helps to their own capabilities. Once the camels are loaded the trek departs. At lunch time we pull up, boil the billy and eat. We continue to walk for a couple of hours after lunch then find a suitable camp for the night. Fire wood is collected and dinner prepared.
Today the walking takes you up dry rocky creeks, narrow gaps and gorges. You head across the rugged landscape which boarders the protected Lake Torrens and Lake Frome. Unfortunately we are unable to access these lakes directly as they lie on sacred Aboriginal land. From here you cross the water shed to start the journey downstream over large sandy creeks lined with native pine vegetation.
As we wind through the majestic hills covered in mallee trees and native pines you will pas through the gap of the towering ranges to the the welcoming site of the small spring fed water hole. The afternoon produces an enchanting walk along the base of the ranges.
Today you will pass through the valley surrounded by open hills. This day brings changes in the surrounding vegetation with outcrops of acacias and cassias. You will travel further along the rocky creek to be surrounded by the towering gorge walls where you will have the chance to see the endemic yellow footed rock wallaby as you pass by another spring fed water hole.
Following along the creek you encounter several more inviting spings until you pass the historic Angorichina Station Woolshed, a relic from the 1850’s before returning to the Flinders and Beyond property where you will take a short transfer to the town of Blinman for the evening. You can explore the small town or Blinman, or take in a tour at the Tin Mine. After checking into your accommodation you will have a chance to refresh and recharge before the group will get together for a final dinner in Hotel.

There is no exact distance walked each day as the route and distance will be determined by how much fodder is around for the camels. You should expect to walk approximately 10-15 km each day. This is such a unique part of the hike, cause there will be times when you will be walking where no-one else has walked before. Camels do not like walking up and down hills, so there will be no steep inclines on this trip. It is rated introductory to moderate.
The climate in the Southern Outback is generally dry and sunny year round.AUTUMN (Mar - May)This season provides warm days with cooler evenings. Day temperatures will average between 15 – 20°C with the later part of the season being cooler. The evening temperatures will be much cooler and warm clothing will be required. As the days cool, wildlife becomes more active during the middle parts of the day.WINTER (Jun - Aug)Walking in winter is particularly beautiful in the Flinders with cold nights and days that are warm with some spectacular sunrises and sunsets. This season provides ideal walking weather with daily temperatures of around 15°C and occasionally as high as 25°C. The evenings and early mornings will be very cold and winter clothing will be required. During July/August temperatures can drop to below 0°C at night. A roaring camp fire and warming glasses of red wine will be enjoyed each night and after winter rains, with surface water in the creeks, wildlife will be far-reaching with lots of food available and very active throughout the day. Emus will generally begin laying from August onwards.SPRING (Sep - Nov)Spring in the Flinders Ranges is undeniably spectacular! It is a great time to spot emu chicks as they begin hatching and the outback brown and orange colours are bright with red, yellow, white and purple with native plants and wildflowers. Migratory birds will generally begin to appear and wedgetail eagle chicks will hatch between August and September, fledging by November. The abundance of and timing of the wildflowers depends entirely on rainfall throughout the year. Day temperatures can average between 20°C-25°C with the later part of the season getting warmer. The evening temperatures will be cooler in the early part of the season so a warm layer of clothing will be required.SUMMER (Dec - Feb)The walking tour is not operate during the hot, summer months, although you can still book a stay at Arkaba Homestead which is open year round and enjoy shorter walks as part of guided activities that are included in the tariff.(Data sourced from Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, Units = °C)
