Self-drive to the Flinders Ranges (approx. 5 hours drive from Adelaide) and settle into your gorgeous eco-lodge where the magic of the South Australian bush is never far away. At sunset, sit back and relax. Rawnsley Park Station overlooks the southern side of Wilpena Pound and provides the perfect base for exploring the Flinders Ranges.
Tucked away in a secluded spot with breathtaking views, your one-bedroom eco-villa is the iconic accommodation in Flinders Ranges. It offers great views of Wilpena Pound and the surrounding ranges from your private verandah. Enjoy a swim in the swimming pool with the Flinders Ranges as the backdrops.
Late afternoon, enjoy a Sunset 4WD tour where you'll watch the stunning sunset reflect on the Chase Range as you sip on local wine and enjoy delicious canapés. Take in the spectacular scenery of the Flinders Ranges and keep an eye out for native Australian flora and fauna in their natural habitat. Your local guide will enthral you with the fascinating geology of the Ranges, as well as stories of the European settlers and Indigenous peoples whose spirits live on in the area today.

Begin your walking adventure on the Heysen Trail – one of the world’s great walking trails and the longest dedicated walking trail in Australia. At Wangara Lookout, enjoy a bird’s eye view into Wilpena Pound aka Earth’s belly button: the only natural wonder in Australia that can rival the iconic red rock that is Uluru. Head down into the bowl of this spectacular formation for a different perspective before heading on to Bridle Gap. Enjoy lunch overlooking Elder Range and watch as the rocks change colour – fire-red, fire-yellow, orange, pink, purple – with the position of the sun. Finish the day at Black Gap before transferring back to your accommodation for another delicious 3-course meal.

Walking Distance: 12km/6hrs; Grading 4.
First stop of the day is the top of Rawnsley Bluff, where sappers erected a cairn in the late 1850s that still stands today. Breathe in the fresh air and take in magnificent bird’s eye views of Rawnsley Park Station before venturing down the Wilpena Lookout side trail to the valley of the Pound and Pompey Pillar, the second highest point on the Pound wall after St Mary Peak. In the afternoon, meander back to your accommodation via the Highlife Trail where you will have the opportunity to sample some native bush tucker including native Sandalwood, Quandong and Native Pear. Dinner is yet another delicious 3-course meal.
Walking Distance: 13km/6hrs; Grading 3
Enjoy a gentler face of the Flinders Ranges with the rolling hills of Bunyeroo Valley. The trail begins on the purplish shales and open cypress woodland of the Bunyeroo Formation and Wilcolo Creek before following a small stream through the ABC Range to the gentle rolling country of Brachina Formation siltstones, which are dotted with silver wattle. Enjoy breathtaking views of Wilpena Pound before stopping for lunch in Bunyeroo Gorge. In the afternoon, hit the road to the eastern escarpment of Wilpena Pound and walk the loop to Arkaroo Rock. A significant cultural site for the Adnyamathanha people, the rock shelter is alive with ochre and charcoal paintings that depict the Yura Muda (Dreaming, or creation story of Wilpena Pound). After, head back to your accommodation for one final 3-course meal.
Walking Distance: 8km/4-5hrs; Grading 4
Venture out to the base of the almost inaccessible Chace Range for one last work out: a 2km ascent that will reward you with breathtaking views of Wilpena Pound. Once you’ve had your fill of this incredible landscape, head back down the way you came to your accommodation where you will enjoy a late lunch. With your mind and body revitalized, say goodbye to Flinders Ranges and begin your self drive return journey to Adelaide. Estimated to depart Flinders Ranges at around 3pm.

Guests are required to self-drive to Flinders Ranges to start the tour. The closest airport servicing the Flinders Ranges is Port Augusta Airport. Rex Regional Express operates flights between Adelaide and Port Augusta. The drive from Adelaide to Rawnsley Park Station is 440km and takes approximately 4hrs and 42min.

The climate in the Southern Outback is generally dry and sunny year round.AUTUMN (Mar - May)This season provides warm days with cooler evenings. Day temperatures will average between 15 – 20°C with the later part of the season being cooler. The evening temperatures will be much cooler and warm clothing will be required. As the days cool, wildlife becomes more active during the middle parts of the day.WINTER (Jun - Aug)Walking in winter is particularly beautiful in the Flinders with cold nights and days that are warm with some spectacular sunrises and sunsets. This season provides ideal walking weather with daily temperatures of around 15°C and occasionally as high as 25°C. The evenings and early mornings will be very cold and winter clothing will be required. During July/August temperatures can drop to below 0°C at night. A roaring camp fire and warming glasses of red wine will be enjoyed each night and after winter rains, with surface water in the creeks, wildlife will be far-reaching with lots of food available and very active throughout the day. Emus will generally begin laying from August onwards.SPRING (Sep - Nov)Spring in the Flinders Ranges is undeniably spectacular! It is a great time to spot emu chicks as they begin hatching and the outback brown and orange colours are bright with red, yellow, white and purple with native plants and wildflowers. Migratory birds will generally begin to appear and wedgetail eagle chicks will hatch between August and September, fledging by November. The abundance of and timing of the wildflowers depends entirely on rainfall throughout the year. Day temperatures can average between 20°C-25°C with the later part of the season getting warmer. The evening temperatures will be cooler in the early part of the season so a warm layer of clothing will be required.SUMMER (Dec - Feb)The walking tour is not operate during the hot, summer months, although you can still book a stay at Arkaba Homestead which is open year round and enjoy shorter walks as part of guided activities that are included in the tariff.(Data sourced from Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology, Units = °C)

The tour operator is at the mercy of nature in all her beauty and all her fury. The tour operator will under no circumstance knowingly place at risk the health and well-being of our guests and guides. In the case of natural threats, acts of God and the like (e.g. bushfires, impassable snow, etc) the tour operator may need to cancel a walk with very little notice. In some cases, this can occur after the walk has commenced. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel any walk up to 60 days prior to departure if a minimum of 4 walkers are unable to meet for a tour. If the tour operator needs to cancel for any reason, the cost of the walk or any other costs associated with travel to the designated pick up point, overnight accommodation, meals, etc will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore we strongly recommend travel insurance be taken out prior to travel.Force Majeure'Force Majeure' means (without restriction) any event which Onlyluxe Travel or its third party providers could not, even with due care, foresee or avoid. Force Majeure covers events such as, but not limited to, adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events beyond our control. In the case of Force Majeure Onlyluxe Travel will not accept liability, and reserves the right to change and cancel trips.EvacuationsIn rare circumstances, due to injury or unforeseen illness, the tour operator may need to evacuate you from a remote part of the walk. Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.Travel InsuranceIn view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid. We recommend insurance cover that covers any loss which may be suffered due to cancellation. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance against loss of baggage and medical expenses.
