Departing from Broome in the morning, set out in a comfortable and modern 4WD into the breathtaking West Kimberley region. Sit back and relax and watch as the city fades into rugged, red Australian outback. As you drive, your expert driver guide will regale you with fun facts about the fascinating local environment, history and people.
First stop: Derby. Here, you will visit the infamous 1,500-year-old Boab Prison Tree, which was used in the 1890s as a lock up for Indigenous prisoners on their way to Derby for sentencing. While in the area, you will also call into an Indigenous art centre to view the paintings of the culturally significant Wandjina and the Gwion Gwions. Finally, a visit to Derby would not be complete without a visit to the town’s horseshoe wharf where you can witness some of the world’s highest tidal movements.
Depart Derby towards the Napier Range. Once a Devonian reef, these escarpments are over 350 million years old and home to a diverse array of animals and plants. The perfect place to experience the splendour of this reef is Windjana Gorge, renowned for water-streaked walls rising to heights of 100-metres (328ft).
Next, take a guided tour of Tunnel Creek, a sacred 750-metre (2460-ft) cave system filled with stalactites, stalagmites and hidden recesses. As you explore the cave, your Indigenous guide will tell you the legend of Jandamarra, an Aboriginal freedom fighter who used this place as a hideout in the late 1800s.
Tonight, you’ll stay in comfortable accommodation on the banks of the mighty Fitzroy River at the aptly named Fitzroy River Lodge.
This morning see’s you departing Fitzroy Crossing with a stop at Halls Creek, the site of the first payable gold find in Western Australia in 1885. Once a booming township full of keen miners hoping to make it big, Halls Creek is now an eerie ghost town with several ruined buildings to explore.
Continue onto Purnululu National Park by way of the 4WD Spring Creek Track. This 100-kilometre (62mi) track is passes through the Mabel Down pastoral station and has several creek crossings to navigate, making for a true-blue outback drive.
You’ll arrive at the award-winning Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, your home for the next two nights, in the late afternoon. You’ll have time to freshen up in your luxury tented cabin before sitting down for a delicious 3-course dinner.
Journey deep into what is sure to be a highlight of your journey: the World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park, home to the famous Bungle Bungle Range. Unknown to the outside world until the 1980s, these astonishing black and orange striped ‘beehives’ were forged by rivers over a period of 20 million years.
In a spacious and comfortable 4WD, travel to the Northern Massif for a moderate 2-kilometre (1.24mi) return walk with a short, challenging climb near the end. Your reward is Echidna Chasm, a geological marvel that rises up to 200-metres with sections as narrow as one metre. In the middle of the day, sunlight penetrates into the gorge creating incredible golden hues. Be further enchanted with a moderate moderate 4-kilometre (2.5mi) return walk through the domes to Cathedral Gorge, where pounding water during the wet season has created a huge natural amphitheatre of red rock with a pool of water in the middle. Be sure to test out your singing voice with these incredible natural acoustics!
In the evening, enjoy drinks and nibbles as you watch the sun set red, pink and purple on the horizon.
In the morning, you have the option of an inspiring helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungles. From above, the beehives look like colossal anthills rising from the Earth – an absolute must-see!
Depart Purnululu National Park and retrace your path along the Spring Creek Track. Along the way, pay a visit to the remarkable China Wall, a natural vein of sub-vertical quartz rising up to six metres above the ground like a mini Great Wall of China. You’ll also stop in at a remote Yiyili Aboriginal community art centre where local artists tell stories of country (note: visits subject to opening times). The outstanding art on show here is sure to inspire you!
Cap off your outback adventure with a scenic cruise through the majestic Danggu Geikie Gorge. Famed for its sheer white and grey walls, Danggu Geikie Gorge was carved from an ancient fossil reef by the mighty Fitzroy River over period of 350 million years. During the cruise, keep an eye out for local wildlife including freshwater crocodiles, birds and fish.
Depart Fitzroy Crossing, journeying the West Kimberley where you’ll cross the Fitzroy River one last time before returning to Broome in the late afternoon to complete your unforgettable journey.

The Kimberley experiences distinct dry and wet seasons. Average daily maximum temperatures in the dry season (April to September) range from 29 degrees (Celsius) in July to 38 degrees in September with little rain and low humidity. Overnight, temperatures may drop to below 6 degrees.
This itinerary involves some clambering over rocks, through water and walking on uneven ground. A reasonable level of fitness is therefore advised, however, options can be arranged to suit most guests’ abilities.

Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.Travel InsuranceIn view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid.
