Approx. 2 - 3 km (1.24 to 1.86 miles), 2 hours walking,
Your adventure begins early this morning in Launceston, with pick-ups at two convenient locations: 7:15am at the Grand Chancellor and 7:30am at the Penny Royal. From there, we’ll transfer you to Bridport Airport for a scenic morning flight to Flinders Island. Upon arrival, we’ll head to the coastal village of Emita, where your guides will provide a detailed briefing about the exciting week ahead.
Our first walk takes us along the stunning coastline to one of Flinders Island’s iconic landmarks, Castle Rock. This impressive three-story granite boulder offers countless photo opportunities as it stands proudly against the breathtaking coastal backdrop.
In the afternoon, we’ll visit the fascinating Furneaux Museum, a volunteer-run treasure trove of history and culture. With our minds enriched, we’ll continue north to Leeka, where our private seaside Eco-Comfort Camp awaits. This will serve as your cozy base for the week as we embark on more unforgettable adventures.
Approx. 10 - 12km (6.2 to 7.5 miles), 6-8 hours walking, moderate grade
Start your day with a hearty breakfast at camp before we set off on a short drive to the base of Mt Killiecrankie, one of Flinders Island’s iconic peaks. The moderately challenging climb rewards us with stunning panoramic views of the bay and surrounding coastline. After soaking in the scenery from the summit, we’ll descend via the diamond gully trail, navigating rocks and scrub as we make our way toward Stacky’s Bight. This spot, with its unique rock formations and sweeping views of the bay, is perfect for a lunch break. You can take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters or simply relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
In the afternoon, we’ll continue along coastal paths and engage in some rock hopping as we make our way to ‘The Docks,’ a hidden gem of Flinders Island. Here, dramatic lichen-covered granite outcrops and towering cliffs meet the sea, creating an unforgettable landscape. After exploring this incredible area, we’ll take a short walk back to our vehicle and return to camp. In the evening, your guides will prepare a delicious meal while you unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures.
Approx. 8 - 9 km (5 to 5.6 miles), 5-6 hours walking, moderate grade
As the golden light of the third morning breaks over Flinders Island, we venture toward the northernmost reaches where the wonderfully remote North East River awaits. This is the island in its most majestic form—a pristine, untamed sanctuary where the earth remains at the full mercy of the elements. Your journey unfolds along a rugged coastline, leading you through the towering Palana sand dunes while the exhilarating views of the Sister Islands shimmer on the horizon like distant jewels. Lose yourself in the quiet wonder of crystalline rock pools and ancient, sun-drenched granite outcrops, finding a profound sense of peace that only comes when one is truly at one with nature. Upon reaching the tranquil settlement of Palana, perhaps you will indulge in a refreshing dip in the azure waters before our private vehicle whisks you back to the secluded comfort of our camp for an evening under a canopy of stars.
Approx. 5 - 7 km (3.1 to 4.3 miles), 1.5-2.5 hours walking, moderate grade
Today, we venture inland to uncover another facet of this enchanting island. Our journey begins with a drive to Walker's Lookout, where breathtaking panoramas of the Darling Range unfold before you. From here, we embark on the Haulands Gap Track, a path that winds through peppermint-scented eucalyptus forests, offering stunning dual vistas of the east and west coastlines.
After our walk, we'll traverse the island to the east coast's Patriarch Inlet for a leisurely stroll toward the impressively and aptly named Red Bluff. Should time allow, we will visit the Patriarch Wildlife Sanctuary, a volunteer conservation effort offering a rare chance to intimately encounter the island’s native creatures. Our day concludes with a poignant visit to the historic Wybalenna, the site of the ill-fated Palawa resettlement scheme, where the graveyard and chapel stand as solemn reminders of a bygone era.
Approx. 4 km (2.5 miles), 6-8 hours walking, moderate to challenging grade
We rise with the sun to embrace the day's full potential. An early departure ensures we witness the stunning panorama from the magnificent summit of Mt Strzelecki, before the afternoon clouds roll in to wrap the peak in their soft, obscuring embrace. Our journey to the top is a challenging 700-metre climb, a path that winds through majestic stands of blue gums and peppermints, and across landscapes of unique alpine vegetation, before we enter an enchanting, evergreen cloud forest.
On a clear day, the rewards are breathtaking, with ever-expanding views of Flinders Island, the scattered outer islands, and the distant northern coastline of mainland Tasmania. We will pause for an unforgettable lunch in this spectacular setting, before beginning the long, winding descent back down the mountain. Upon our return, an optional—yet highly recommended—swim in the crystalline waters of Fotheringate Bay awaits, a refreshing ritual to revive and restore our muscles before we settle in for our final, starlit night on the island.
Approx. 2km (1.2 miles), 1.5 hours walking, easy grade
On our final morning on Flinders Island, we’ll take it slow, enjoying a peaceful moment on the beach before breaking camp for the last time. On our way south, we’ll stop in at Whitemark for a warm drink and a chance to chat with the locals. From there, we head to Big River Road to begin our morning hike to Trousers Point, one of Tasmania’s Great Short Walks. This stunning coastal trail offers breathtaking views from Trousers Point Beach to the towering Mount Strzelecki. You’ll have time to wade in the calm waters before we head back to the vehicle. Next, we visit Unavale Vineyard, a hidden gem on Flinders Island. This family-run vineyard is nestled among rolling hills with ocean breezes, where passionate locals craft wines from sustainably grown grapes. Here, we’ll enjoy a private vineyard tour and tasting, learning about their unique cool-climate varietals and the stories behind their operation. A relaxed ploughman’s-style lunch among the vines rounds out this special experience, a perfect way to savour the island's flavors and reflect on the journey with your group.
After lunch, we transfer to the airport for our scenic return flight to Bridport at 2:30pm. From there, we travel to Launceston, arriving at approximately 5:00pm. For those staying on, we’ll return you to either the Grand Chancellor or Penny Royal accommodation. We recommend booking a post-tour night in case of any flight delays from Flinders Island.

Tasmania lies between latitudes 40 and 43, with its weather and temperatures influenced by the surrounding oceans. The island’s cool temperate climate features four distinct seasons, which can change rapidly throughout the day. On Flinders Island, summer offers ideal walking conditions, with average highs of 21°C and lows of 12°C. However, the wind, especially along the west-facing coast, can make it feel cooler. Rainfall on Flinders Island’s west coast is lower than mainland Tasmania’s west coast, averaging 744mm annually, but heavy, unseasonal rain can occur anytime. To fully enjoy the wilderness, it’s essential to have the right gear and equipment to stay safe and comfortable in variable conditions.
When should I arrive in Launceston? You must arrive in Launceston the day before your tour begins. The tour commences with a hotel pick-up at 7:15am from the Grand Chancellor or 7:30am from the Penny Royal, so you will need to arrange a night of pre-trip accommodation for the night before. We recommend arranging your flights to arrive around lunchtime, to allow time for any unexpected flight delays. If travelling from overseas please be sure to inform us of your Australian contact details. Please be patient while waiting for the pick up as sometimes there can be the odd, unexpected delay.
How fit do I need to be?You will need a good level of fitness for the walks on Flinders Island. You need to be capable and prepared to spend 5-7 hours each day trekking over rugged terrain with some steep ascents and descents. If you have any questions about your suitability please give us a call and speak with one of our staff members. We are more than happy to discuss additional information about what you can expect.
How much weight will I carry? The Flinders Island Walking Adventure - in Comfort tour is fully vehicle supported. You will carry just a day pack containing the items you need during the day (including water, sun hat, snacks, lunch, camera, waterproof and warm layers). This is likely to weigh between 5-7kg.
Can I bring a CPAP machine? If you need to use a CPAP machine during the trip please speak with our staff about this. There are charging points at camp, in the form of small solar-powered power banks in your tents. You will need to bring spare batteries that can be charged by USB port during the day while the group are not at camp and/or bring a small solar panel to charge the batteries.
Is there reception or Wi-Fi on the island?Only Telstra services work on the island. The island’s isolation is what gives it great appeal though, so why not embrace the limited reception?
Can I recharge my phone & camera batteries?Small solar-powered power banks are provided for each guest in the tents, however please note that sunlight can sometimes be limited on the island, so we recommend bringing your own power bank for personal devices and/or spare batteries for your camera.
When is the best time to visit Flinders Island?Late spring (October and November) and summer (December to February) are great times to explore Flinders Island due to its warmer temperatures, which makes a refreshing swim after a day’s walk more enticing. This is generally the more popular time to visit the island.
The autumn season (March to May) offers quieter trails, incredible night skies filled with stars, and generally cheaper flights over the shoulder season; plus there’s the chance to see migratory birds in April.
Do I need to have hiking boots to do this hike?We highly recommend that you have mid cut hiking boots or walking shoes for this tour. There are lots of slippery tree roots in the rainforest areas, so ankle support will be beneficial. Also, you will encounter plenty of sand, mud and walk across coastal granite rock along the way, so if they are waterproof, you will hopefully have nice dry feet at the end of the day. Small ankle gaiters are sometimes a good optional extra.
Is alcohol provided?Alcohol is not provided on this trip however you can bring your own if you wish. You will need to purchase any alcohol in Launceston and bring it onto the island with you. The weight of your alcohol will be included in the weight of your main luggage (1 bag of max 15kg per person).
Our exclusive eco-comfort campsite on Flinders Island offers a unique and relaxing base for your tour. Enjoy a permanent kitchen and dining platform, providing rustic shelter and a stunning spot to sip a hot drink, share stories from the day, and enjoy a hearty evening meal. The campsite features basic bathroom facilities, including a toilet and a hot shower. With breathtaking scenery all around, you’ll also have plenty of chances to swim in the island’s crystal-clear waters.
Accommodation includes Tasmanian-designed canvas sleeping pods, elevated on platforms with entrance decks to keep interiors clean and provide a peaceful seating area. Each pod includes wooden single bed frames with sheets, a pillow, and a mattress for a comfortable night’s sleep. Solo travelers can request a single tent at no extra charge, subject to availability, as the number of tents is limited and depends on group size.
Shower Facilities at the Camp SiteThe hot showers give trekkers a welcome way to wash away the sweat of a good days walk across the Island. Hot water is heated using a “Donkey” hot water boiler - an efficient hot water system and an economical way to warm water. Trekkers have a 9 Litre bucket of warm water to use in our shower tents, which allows for warm-hot showers that run for 2 – 2 1/2 minutes.
