Welcome to Tasmania! Australia’s famous “Apple Isle”. Home to wild and beautiful landscapes, friendly people with a relaxed island lifestyle, wonderful food and wine, and a fascinating history evoked by world-famous convict ruins.
Start your adventure with a splash kayaking Hobart’s cliffs, caves and beaches. Paddle among tranquil bays and beneath the lichen-coved Alum Cliffs, explore sea caves, enjoy views of Bruny Island and leave your footprints on idyllic sandy beaches. Along the way, keep an eye out for the abundant wildlife that call Tinderbox Marine Reserve home: majestic white-bellied sea eagles, seals, stingrays and, if you’re lucky, a pod of dolphins or a migrating whale. Tuck into a well-deserved lunch on a beautiful sandy beach.
After a full day’s paddle, return to your accommodation where you will find ample dinner options at nearby Salamanca Market and the Hunter Street Precinct.
Kayaking distance: 4-5hours. Moderate Grade.
After a gourmet breakfast, set out on another day’s kayaking, this time along the stunning Tasman Peninsula from the coast of Tasman National Park towards Cape Hauy, a star feature of Tasmania’s newest world-class hike: The Three Capes Track. At sea-level, you will truly appreciate the Southern Hemisphere’s highest sea cliffs, which stretch 200m into the sky. Peer into sea caves, photograph the towering Candlestick and search for climbers on the Totem Pole: one of the world’s most daring column climbs.
After a gourmet Tasmanian lunch at a deserted cove, paddle over a semi-submerged shipwreck and marvel at more of this region’s incredible wildlife. The water is so crystal-clear you might spot large schools of fish.
Kayaking distance: 2hours. EasyGrade.
Venture out an exclusive full day, guided hike of the Mt Field Tarn Shelf Circuit. Mt Field is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and home to some of the world’s tallest Eucalypt forests as well as a unique area of plants and animals including kangaroos, wallabies and koalas.
Starting from Lake Dobson, follow the winding road up through Mt Field National Park. The natural flora transforms as you climb, offering a constantly changing view that will leave you breathless. The highlight of the climb is Tarn Shelf, a picturesque series of small glacial lakes, which are particularly colourful in Autumn when the Fagus beech – Australia’s only deciduous tree – turn golden red and yellow. Other highlights include Lake Newdegate, Twilight Tarn and Lake Webster. You also have time to visit the rustic Twilight Tarn hut, the oldest surviving ski hut in Australia (est. 1920s).
Overnight in the magnificent Tasmanian Central Highlands and enjoy a delicious evening meal.
Kayaking distance: 2hours. Easy Grade.
After a hearty breakfast, transfer to your new accommodation within the stunning Southwest National Park. From here, set out on a guided kayaking tour to explore the Derwent Valley Western Wilds: home to the purest air, the cleanest water, the most stunning waterways and an abundance of unspoiled nature and wildlife.
Over two hours, explore Lake Pedder’s amber waters and secret quartzite beaches. Take in rugged mountains and, in the warmer months, enjoy a refreshing swim. Morning tea and lunch are included, showcasing world-famous Tasmanian produce.
Return to your accommodation and enjoy a delicious meal.
Walking distance: flexible walking distance to suit fitness levels.
Today you have choice to explore the southwest on foot. You can challenge yourself with a self-guided hike through button grass and vibrant alpine surroundings to Eliza Plateau. The hike is rocky and steep but the view from the top is worth it: jaw-dropping views of Lake Pedder, Lake Judd and the mighty Franklin Range. You will feel on top of the world.
If you would prefer to take it easy, other bushwalks in the surrounding area include The Needles, Teds Beach and the Gordon Dam Wall. The Needles is a three kilometre trail, which begins at the highest point on the Gordon River Road, en route to Lake Pedder. The impressive size and haunting nature of this trail is realized as the harsh grey face of the first needle-like outcrop comes into view. Teds Beach Boardwalk, meanwhile, provides an excellent perspective of the vastness of Lake Pedder and the serenity of the surrounding area. Finally, the Gordon Dam Wall is a must-see for any visitor to the South West: the wall is a colossal 140 metres and holds 30 times the water of Sydney Harbour!
Walking distance: 2-3hours .Easy to Moderate Grade.
After a hearty breakfast, a local guide will pick you up and take you to a scenic location for one last walk (the location will vary depending on the time of year, but options include the Russell Falls, Tasmania’s prettiest waterfall, and Lake Dobson where you will find beautiful flora including Tasmanian waratahs).
After your walk, stop in at a local distillery or two to sample some of Tasmania’s famous gins. Thanks to the state’s diverse botanicals, the Tasmanian gin scene is now booming with a gin to suit even the most discerning taste buds.
Cap off your active adventure with a gourmet lunch at one of the region’s top restaurants. After, let your driver do the work as you relax and unwind on the drive back to Hobart where you may commence your onward journey.
