Greatest Rail Journeys in Australia
A luxury holiday of a life time on one of the great Australian rail journeys. Rail & Sail, Reef & Rail, Outback & Rail...
The emergence of Hesei-Shinzan (a prominent mountain within the Uzen mountains) in the heart of Nagasaki Prefecture is a reminder that nature can be immensely powerful and generous. In this magical place, a volcano filters drinking water, feeds crops, cooks meals, and powers day-to-day living.
To experience Unzen is to understand how humans coexist with a force as mighty as a volcano, not against it. This intimate and immersive journey shows you how the five senses can tell a story that history books cannot.
Start your journey at the Iwado Shrine
Iwado-san, as locals affectionately call it, is located deep in the forests of Uzen, Amakusa National Park. Locals revere the sacred Shinto shrine as “Power Spot,” believed to grant blessings of health, longevity, and renewal.
Before the path reveals itself, the atmosphere shift is the first thing you will observe: cool air, and light softly filtering through soaring cedar and cypress trees; then the damp and earthy scent of moss.
Sight awakens first. Observe the moss-covered stones, ancient roots, and shadowed caves as they all extend with the landscape like a place for celestials. A clear, naturally formed waterfall also emerges from the rock, then flows gently through the shrine grounds. This water source originates from Heisei-Shinzan, carrying the very life force of the volcano itself.

As you walk deeper, sound takes precedence; there is neither traffic here nor artificial noise here, only the rhythmic trickle of water, the rustle of leaves, and the occasional call of birds. The shrine is surrounded by trees older than 300 years and has been a silent witness to centuries of prayers offered here. There is even visible evidence of human presence in this area dating back to Japan's Jomon Period (14,000 BCE to 300 BCE), showing just how long people have been drawn to the energy of this land.
Touch the cool moss growing on tree trunks, the stone lanterns, and feel the quiet vitality of this sacred place pulse through your palms. The earth beneath your feet also partakes, shifting unevenly as you walk. In these moments, touch becomes grounding, connecting you to something ancient and enduring. Many people who visit here leave feeling lighter, calmer, as if the forest has quietly restored what modernity has worn down.

Continue your journey on an E-Bike Tour through the rice paddy fields and farms of Unzen
Leaving the forest and mountains behind, Unzen’s lush countryside becomes ripe for taking. The sounds and sensations you have absorbed through Iwado’s powerful energy are the first immersion. The road ahead takes you deeper into the journey with electric-assisted bikes that allow you encounter sights you usually may not be able to see when driving in a car.
Engage your senses of sight and sound as you pass by beautiful rice paddy fields as well as fruit and vegetable farms along Unzen’s countryside, all drawing from the same volcanic water source to nourish and sustain. Your sight expands forward to reveal not just swaying rice paddy fields, but traditional farmhouses with smoky chimneys. Also in the distance, you will get a better view of Unzen’s volcanic ridgeline as it rises steadfastly.
Smell the soothing aroma of freshly growing rice and mountain air, softly mixing with hints of wood smoke and wild grass.
The path also reveals farmers tending their fields; you may exchange friendly greetings or hear a burst of laughter from a distant chatter.
Take out some time to rest; Use this moment to enjoy the sun’s warmth on your skin or the breeze against your arms. Then savor a final descent down the coast of Unzen, where you will have the opportunity to inhale the distinctive salty scents of the Ariake sea and Tachibana Bay, and feel the cool, refreshing water at your feet.
Geothermal Cooking (Photo Credit: onlyluxe.com.au)
After a scenic E-Bike Tour, enjoy a beautiful geothermal dining experience in Obama
Upon reaching Obama, your senses of sight, smell, and touch are now fully awake; it is now time to taste.
Obama is one of the most geothermal-active towns in Japan and produces over 100°C (212°F) steam vents, which result in an estimated 15,000 tons of hot water released per day. Rather than let that energy go to waste, locals harness heat for geothermal cooking, which you experience firsthand.
It involves placing seafood, vegetables, and eggs in special steamers or baskets over the natural vents and allowing them to slowly cook using the heat rising from the underground magma. This centuries-old method preserves more moisture while enhancing the natural flavors without oil or heavy seasoning. Remarkably, the food tastes clean, subtle, and deeply rooted in the earth’s vitality. Seafood achieves an exceptional tenderness that's hard to replicate with conventional methods, while sweet potatoes grown in the region's volcanic soil develop an even richer, sweeter profile when steamed this way.
You will be part of the entire experience offered at a ‘Jigoku-Mushi’ style restaurant. The young couple hosts who reside here are always ready to throw a memorable dining affair with the opportunity to try out a large variety of indigenous vegetables provided and enriched by the land.

Finish off the journey with a guided walk around the town of Obama
Obama’s hot springs have been documented in historical records for over 1,300 years, making it one of Japan’s ancient hot spring towns. Conclude your journey here with a one-hour walk through this seaside town. Observe the harmonic living of locals with the nearby volcano, which has, for centuries, played an important role in the culture, architecture, and daily routines of the locals.
Visit charming shops like BonPatti, a beloved, family-run confectionery famous for its signature ‘Kurusu’ (Cruz), which is essentially delicate, crisp wafer cookies filled with flavored white chocolate. The Obama shrine and several small temples tucked into the narrow streets are all exciting options to explore further.
Observe the symbiotic relationship in the community, shopkeepers greeting neighbours, artisans working together, and the local markets fully alive.
At long last, the journey of the 5 senses comes to an end with an intimate tea ceremony set in a quiet Japanese garden. The experience even allows you to whisk your own matcha and savour it alongside sweet treats from BonPatti.
