A must-see when visiting the Kimberley is the famous Bungle Bungle range. This world heritage listed geological landmark is located within Purnululu National Park. Purnululu, meaning ‘sandstone’, has long been inhabited by local Aboriginal people, but did not become known to the rest of the world until the 1980s. The sandstone domes known as the Bungle Bungles rise 300 metres above the surrounding grassy plains. To visit the Bungle Bungles as a standalone expedition, tours can be arranged by 4WD or scenic flight. Once there, the national park can be explored on foot through long narrow chasms and hidden gorges. The 300m high domes of the Bungle Bungle range are found in the southern end of the park as is Cathedral Gorge, and Echidna Chasm is found in the northern end. Various walking trails guide visitors around the park. 130 bird species and unique native animals are known to inhabit the park including the nailtail wallaby and short-eared rock wallaby.


Another intriguing spectacle is situated in the turquoise water of Talbot Bay. A fast moving tidal current squeezes through two narrow gorges of the McLarty Range, pushing the water into rapid formations which rush through the twin gaps at an astounding rate, producing something best described as a lying down waterfall. This phenomenal sight is known as the Horizontal Falls. Located in the Buccaneer Archipelago this unique waterfall is not accessible by vehicle but scenic flights from either Broome or Derby can be booked year-round. Daring visitors can land at the Horizontal Falls and take a thrilling boat ride through the rushing water torrents.
