Greatest Rail Journeys in Australia
A luxury holiday of a life time on one of the great Australian rail journeys. Rail & Sail, Reef & Rail, Outback & Rail...
The Kimberley is located in Australia's remote northwest. This vast and unspoiled region is known for rugged ranges, dramatic gorges, spectacular waterfalls and a largely isolated coastline. The Kimberley is bordered on the west by the Indian Ocean, on the north by the Timor Sea, on the south by the Great Sandy and Tanami Deserts in the region of Pilbara, and on the east by the Northern Territory. Covering nearly 423,000 square kilometres, this ancient region has fewer people per square kilometre than almost any other place on Earth and, in parts, remains unexplored, however there are myriad opportunities to explore this awe-inspiring location from air, land and sea. An expedition into the Kimberley offers some of Western Australia’s most exciting wilderness experiences. Striking landscapes, twinkling gorges and thundering waterfalls provide the perfect backdrop for a Kimberley exploration on land while on its coast lie some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, untouched coral atolls and rugged islands with an amazing variety of marine life. Many tour operators offer walking tours throughout the Kimberley region. Most tours of more than a day's duration are hosted by expert guides and include campsite accommodation and transfers. The most comprehensive walking tour of the Kimberley is spread over 13 days and 12 nights and taking in iconic sights such as Winjana Gorge, the Pentecost River, Manning Falls, the famous Prison Boab Tree and many areas of cultural significance culminating in a visit to the incredible Bungle Bungles within the Purnululu National Park. Throughout the walk there are opportunities to spot freshwater crocodiles and varied birdlife and plenty of time allocated for swimming in sparkling waterholes under cascading waterfalls. While distances covered each day are relatively short (between 3 and 10km per day), the terrain can be unpredictable and challenging in areas and so a good level of fitness is advised to make the most of the experience. Each night a tent is assembled for each guest or group and a meal cooked over the campfire for walkers to enjoy as the sun sets. THE KIMBERLEY EXPLORER TREKKING 13D12N (DEPARTS BROOME OR KUNUNURRA), FULLY GUIDEDTo admire this fascinating landscape from a different perspective, a luxury cruise through the region offers an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Kimberley. Most adventure cruise ships have been specially designed to access hard to reach areas bringing passengers within reach of ancient rock formations, enormous waterfalls and passing wildlife. Cruise durations vary but are usually between 7 and 14 nights and are all-inclusive. Many cruises begin or end in Broome, home of the spectacular Cable Beach, a town with a rich history in pearling and an ideal location to spend some time relaxing before or after an adventure on the water. For the most comprehensive introduction to the region, the ‘Kimberley Ultimate’ 14-night cruise takes in renowned sights such as the King George Falls, Mitchell River, Montgomery Reef and the Horizontal Falls. Adventures each day include visiting Aboriginal cave paintings, barramundi fishing, oyster catching, pearl farms and regular helicopter flights over the spectacular surroundings.View All Kimberly Luxury CruisesThe sky offers the most breathtaking perspective on this enormous landscape and flights are easily arranged from one of the Kimberley gateway towns: Broome, Wyndham, Derby or Kununurra, or by a tour guide or accommodation provider. Many locations across the region cannot be accessed any other way and a wealth of incredible hidden wonders can be discovered and explored. From 20 minutes to three hours or more, a number of helicopter experiences are available taking in sights such as the Cockburn Ranges, Emma Gorge, Amaroo Falls and can incorporate additional activities such as sunset picnics or fishing. A must-see when visiting the Kimberley is the famous Bungle Bungle range. This world heritage listed geological landmark is located within Purnululu National Park. Purnululu, meaning ‘sandstone’, has long been inhabited by local Aboriginal people, but did not become known to the rest of the world until the 1980s. The sandstone domes known as the Bungle Bungles rise 300 metres above the surrounding grassy plains. To visit the Bungle Bungles as a standalone expedition, tours can be arranged by 4WD or scenic flight. Once there, the national park can be explored on foot through long narrow chasms and hidden gorges. The 300m high domes of the Bungle Bungle range are found in the southern end of the park as is Cathedral Gorge, and Echidna Chasm is found in the northern end. Various walking trails guide visitors around the park. 130 bird species and unique native animals are known to inhabit the park including the nailtail wallaby and short-eared rock wallaby. Another intriguing spectacle is situated in the turquoise water of Talbot Bay. A fast moving tidal current squeezes through two narrow gorges of the McLarty Range, pushing the water into rapid formations which rush through the twin gaps at an astounding rate, producing something best described as a lying down waterfall. This phenomenal sight is known as the Horizontal Falls. Located in the Buccaneer Archipelago this unique waterfall is not accessible by vehicle but scenic flights from either Broome or Derby can be booked year-round. Daring visitors can land at the Horizontal Falls and take a thrilling boat ride through the rushing water torrents.Nestled in the heart of the Kimberley and providing an ideal basecamp to explore this remote part of Australia is El Questro.
