Our first stop is the breathtaking Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, one of the most exquisite landmarks in Oman. Spanning an impressive 416,000 square meters including landscaped areas, the mosque complex itself covers 40,000 square meters and is elevated on a podium in the traditional style of Omani mosques. Designed to accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers, the mosque features a grand prayer hall, a ladies’ prayer hall, covered passageways, a meeting hall, and a library that will eventually house 20,000 books.
A highlight of the mosque is the magnificent handwoven Persian carpet in the main prayer hall. Measuring 70 x 60 meters, this single-piece masterpiece took four years to complete and comprises 1.7 billion knots, weighing 21 tons. Created by 600 female artisans from Iran’s Khurasan province, the carpet is a true work of art.
Note: The Grand Mosque is open for visitors from Saturday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Ladies are required to wear a headscarf and modest clothing that fully covers their arms and legs.
Next, visit the Al Alam Palace, the ceremonial residence of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos. Nestled between the historic Portuguese forts of Mirani and Jalali, the palace showcases stunning architecture and is a must-visit for photography enthusiasts (please note, the visit is limited to an exterior photo stop).
Continue to Muttrah Souq, one of the oldest and most vibrant markets in the Middle East.
