The Chalet, meanwhile, is not to be confused with New Zealand’s typical alpine huts. The Chalet boasts 2 bedrooms, a spacious loft, staff bunk room, central heating, power, hot shower and large windows framing views of Mount Cook and Mount Aspiring with its tumbling glaciers. Designed to maximise the opportunities of the incredible location while minimising the impact on the environment, the Chalet’s roof holds snow for insulation and solar cells for power, contributing to Whare Kea’s green credentials.
The Lodge features a fully equipped kitchen with everything you need to cook up a storm. Alternatively, why not hire a private chef and professional waitstaff to organise everything for you? If you would prefer to eat out, Wanaka boasts far more options for wining and dining than is usually expected from a town this size. The town’s neighbouring vineyards are world-renowned for their wine production -most famously Pinot Noir. There are also a number of award-winning craft breweries, and an artisan spirit distillery.

The Lodge has everything you need for a fun and relaxing stay. Soak in the outdoor spa pool or challenge your family and friends in the billiards and games room with guitar and piano. Make yourself at home in the large, combined dining and lounge spaces with guest bar and open fireplace or relax and unwind in the various outdoor seating areas with outdoor chimenea and gas barbeque. Other facilities and amenities include helipad on the front lawn, direct access to lakeside tracks and ski storage and drying facilities.
Whare Kea is as much an extension of the landscape, as it is a refuge within it. When the land was purchased by the owners, 10,000 trees were planted including silver birch, larch, Douglas fir, chestnut, oak and poplar. Since then, native breeds such as Kowhai, flax, toi-toi’s and lancewoods have been added. The Lodge has been designed to maintain as minimal a carbon footprint as possible. With high performance double glazed floor to ceiling windows, natural heat and light is maximised to reduce the need for heating.
