G’day and welcome to the Top End!
Upon arrival at Darwin Airport, your private chauffeur meets and transfers you to your 4-star accommodation for the evening: Vibe Hotel Darwin Waterfront. Perfectly positioned among the dining and entertainment hub of Darwin’s seafront promenade, Vibe is surrounded by great shopping, a range of Territorian pubs, as well as some of the most amazing cafes and restaurants in the NT.
In the late afternoon, discover the city’s best angles on an iconic sunset cruise of Darwin Harbour. Aboard the 25-metre Charles Darwin, cruise for two and a half hours and enjoy a sumptuous Territory-inspired buffet with fresh Australian seafood and local produce. The crew will provide commentary along the way, delving into the Harbour’s history, cultural significance and biodiversity. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife including crocodiles, dolphins, dugongs and turtles.
At approx. 8:00am, your expert local guide collects you from your accommodation in a luxury, air-conditioned 4WD.
First stop is Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve. Located approximately 70-kilometres east of Darwin along the Arnhem Highway, Fogg Dam is one of the few wetland systems that is accessible all year-round. Boardwalks take you through the different landscapes to view the large number of resident wading birds, freshwater turtles, water pythons and other wildlife.
Moving on, cross the Marrakai Plains and the Adelaide and Mary Rivers.
Next, turn off the Arnhem Highway to join a cruise aboard the famous Corroboree Billabong. Part of the Mary River Wetlands, the Corroboree Billabong is home to the largest concentration of saltwater crocodiles in the world. Keep your eyes peeled for these magnificent prehistoric creatures as well as more than 280 different bird species.
Back on dry land, head down the old Jim Jim 4WD dirt track into Kakadu National Park, the largest national park in Australia covering almost 20,000 square kilometres. Here, you will pay a visit to the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre, where you will find displays including artefacts that illustrate the stories of the Traditional Owners dating back over 50,000 years. On the way out, those wanting a souvenir should visit the gallery shop for handmade arts and crafts including traditional Didgeridoos.
You will stay the next two nights at Cooinda Lodge Kakadu. Located beneath a canopy of trees beside Yellow Water Billabong, this village style property offers an inviting shaded swimming pool, bistro style dining, bars and more.
After breakfast, journey to the Nanguluwur rock art and occupation sites. Less well known than other rock art sites, Nanguluwur boasts hand stencils, dynamic figures in large headdresses carrying boomerangs and spears, and representations of Namandi spirits and mythical figures, including Alkajko, a female spirit with four arms. You will also see an example of ‘contact art’, which represents Aboriginal people’s first contact with white man. Your guide will explain the unique art and rich culture of the area.
Head south along the 4WD track to Maguk (Barramundi) Gorge, where you will spend the afternoon exploring this pristine natural waterfall and plunge pool. Swim with the black bream, spot the spangled drongos and rainbow pitas in the rainforest and marvel at the majestic endemic Anbinik trees along the rock slopes.
Later in the afternoon, embark on a 2-hour sunset cruise and immerse yourself in the enchanting moments of twilight on Yellow Water. The Yellow Water Cruise is one of the must do cruises in Kakadu National Park. Situated at the terminus of Jim Jim Creek, Yellow Water constitutes an integral segment of the South Alligator River system. What sets this river system apart is its exclusive inclusion entirely within a National Park designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for the bountiful wildlife and marvel at this incredible landscape at golden hour.
After an early breakfast, journey further north along the Magela Wetlands, following the escarpment to join an Indigenous-guided cultural cruise on the East Alligator River. Take in the wonderful pristine wilderness of this World Heritage landscape as your Aboriginal guide provides insight into their culture, local mythology, the river’s abundant food chain, traditional uses for many plants and animals as well as bush survival skills.
Back on dry land, venture into Arnhem Land with special permission from the Traditional Owners. Here, you will meet Aboriginal artists and weavers and watch them at work. This is a unique opportunity to purchase genuine Aboriginal arts and crafts at wholesale prices (although, please note you are under no pressure to buy). Enjoy spectacular views of the Arnhem Land Wetlands before returning to Kakadu.
Visit Ubirr lookout. Ubirr hosts some of the world's most outstanding rock art and is one of the reasons for Kakadu's dual World Heritage status. A 1 km circular track takes you past the rock art sites before a steep 250 m climb to a rocky lookout with 360-degree views of Arnhem Land and the Nadab plains.
After breakfast, journey to the fascinating Termite Mounds along the way to Bukbukluk Lookout, offering stunning panoramic views.
After lunch, continue on to the township of Katherine. Here, you will join a sunset dinner cruise through the majestic Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge. Cruise through the spectacular gorges at sunset enjoying a first class meal with linen table cloths and champagne. With its sheer ochre walls that glow in the changing light, Nitmiluk Gorge is a true natural wonder. It is also home to many species of colourful birds, fish, flora and freshwater crocodiles.
You will stay the night at Cicada Lodge, a unique luxury lodge overlooking the Katherine River. This is the ultimate sanctuary from which to embrace the ancient landscape and Indigenous culture within the Nitmiluk National Park.
After breakfast, journey deeper into Nitmiluk National Park to the magnificent Leliyn (Edith Falls), a series of cascading waterfalls and pools on the Edith River. The area is great for bushwalking with the 2.6-kilometre Leliyn Trail offering an exhilarating walk along a steep, rocky loop. Those who challenge themselves have the opportunity to cool off with a refreshing swim in the upper pool of the falls, halfway around the trail. Keen walkers can also enjoy the longer 9-kilometre walk to Sweetwater Pool, a tranquil swimming hole fringed by pandanus trees.
After lunch, continue onto Pine Creek, an old gold mining town that stumbled into existence when the teams building the Overland Telegraph Line in 1870 dug up some gold while digging holes for posts. Spend time exploring the town including the Railway Station Museum, the National Trust Museum, the Ah Toy Bakery and the ‘Walk Through Time’ footpath.
Begin the journey back to Darwin, admiring the billabongs and wetlands along the way. Arriving back in the late afternoon, you will stay the night where the journey began: Vibe Waterfront Hotel Darwin Waterfront.
Take your time waking up and enjoy one last breakfast before commencing your onward journey. A private transfer to Darwin Airport is included for your convenience.
