Leaving Launceston behind, your journey begins with a visit to the Tiagarra Museum, perched on the dramatic Mersey Bluff in Devonport. Here, you'll be welcomed with a heartfelt Welcome to Country ceremony, followed by a guided tour of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place. Marvel at ancient Aboriginal petroglyphs etched into the landscape and deepen your understanding of the rich culture and history of the Palawa people — the Traditional Owners of Lutruwita (Tasmania).
From there, wind your way along part of the celebrated Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail, a region renowned for its exceptional local produce and artisan flavours, arriving in the charming coastal town of Penguin for a leisurely lunch. The town itself is a delight, dotted with whimsical penguin sculptures and offering lovely views of Bass Strait.
The afternoon brings your first walk of the trip — Philosopher Falls, a hidden gem nestled within a lush temperate rainforest. The mostly gentle trail winds through towering ferns and ancient myrtles before descending a steep set of steps to reveal the spectacular waterfall below.
As the day draws to a close, make your way to Corinna — a remote and historic former gold mining town now enveloped by the pristine wilderness of Takayna (the Tarkine). Settle in for dinner surrounded by the sights and sounds of one of Australia's largest temperate rainforests.
Step back in time and surrender to the serene embrace of the Tarkine rainforest with an enchanting two-night escape to Corinna Wilderness Village, a historic, late-1800s mining outpost beautifully preserved on the banks of the majestic Pieman River. We invite you to unplug in elegant, eco-friendly cottages, conquer the wilderness on the region’s premier hiking trails, and savour locally sourced delights at the rustic Tannin Restaurant after a day of exploring this untouched paradise.
Note: Your accommodation for the next two nights is in individually set up cottages. You will be sharing a 2-bedroom cottage with other members of your group. These cottages have 2 individual private rooms, however the bathroom in the cottage will be shared among the 2 rooms. If you have booked a single supplement you will receive your own bedroom, however the bathroom in each cabin is still shared with the other bedroom in that cottage. This is made up by the unique setting deep in Tarkine's wilderness on the banks of the Pieman River.
Your travel time today will be approximately 1 hour.
Approx. 11km (7 miles), 3-5 hours walking
Begin your day with an enchanting 1.5-hour boat cruise along the serene Pieman River, where the ancient wilderness slowly awakens around you. Step ashore at Hardwicke Point on the northern bank, and venture through sweeping coastal heathland that stretches towards the untamed sea at Pieman Heads — a dramatic meeting point where the rugged Tasmanian coastline greets the vast Southern Ocean.
From here, follow the wild and rocky shoreline to Rupert Point, a breathtaking vantage point that rewards you with sweeping panoramas of Sandy Cape's pristine sands and the untouched coastline you've journeyed through. Take a moment to soak in the sheer magnificence of this remote corner of the world before retracing your steps back to Hardwicke Point.
Re-board your vessel for a relaxed cruise back to Corinna, reflecting on the day's discoveries as the river glides quietly past ancient rainforest. As evening descends, gather once more at the Tannin Restaurant, where a carefully crafted dinner awaits, served beneath the sheltering canopy of the surrounding wilderness.

Begin your day with an invigorating morning walk along either the Whyte River Loop or the Savage River Return Walk — both offering stunning natural scenery that sets the tone for the adventures ahead. From there, you'll make your way to the iconic Cradle Mountain, with a memorable stop at Montezuma Falls along the way.
The walk to Montezuma Falls is a relatively easy, mostly flat trail that winds through lush, ancient rainforest along a former tramway route. As you venture deeper into the wilderness, the towering trees and dense undergrowth create a sense of true seclusion. At 104 metres, Montezuma Falls is one of Tasmania's highest waterfalls, and the sight of it cascading down the rugged cliff face is nothing short of breathtaking. A bridge near the falls offers sweeping views back to the waterfall and out over Tasmania's wild western rainforests — a truly spectacular vantage point. After taking in the beauty of Montezuma Falls, you'll continue your journey to Cradle Mountain, one of Australia's most iconic natural landmarks.
Nestled at the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Discovery Resorts Cradle Mountain offers a rare blend of wilderness immersion and refined comfort, with cosy cabin-style accommodations and an inviting heated pool that beckons after a day of exploration. The only certainty about Tasmania weather is that it's unpredictable! Be prepared for warm sunny days in summer, with good chance that things turn cold, wet and windy very quickly! In summer, the average day-time temperature sits around 20 degrees (celcius), falling to around ten degrees at night, while average monthly rainfall is approximately 80-100mm. The region experiences strong westerly winds in the afternoons.
Tasmania's Tarkine and Cradle Mountain regions share a cool temperate climate, though elevation sets them apart. The Tarkine, a low-lying temperate rainforest in the island's northwest, experiences mild conditions year-round. Summer daytime temperatures (December to February) typically range from 17°C to 22°C, while winter days (June to August) sit between 8°C and 13°C, with overnight lows occasionally dropping close to freezing. Its high annual rainfall, often exceeding 2,000 millimetres, keeps humidity high and temperatures moderate. Cradle Mountain, rising above 1,500 metres, is noticeably colder due to its altitude. Summer daytime temperatures generally reach 12°C to 17°C, but nights can fall below 5°C even in the warmer months. In winter, daytime temperatures often stay between 0°C and 6°C, with frequent frosts, sub-zero overnight lows, and regular snowfall on the higher peaks. Both regions are known for rapid weather changes, so conditions can shift markedly within a single day regardless of the season.

Your group leader or local representative will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. Fitness & Preparation: There is no such thing as an 'easy day' on this tour. However, the walk has been designed to make it achievable to those with a reasonable amount of fitness by the fact that you only carry a daypack; and you start with short distances, working your way up to longer days. You will be surprised just how your fitness improves over the seven days. After a few days, people are striding out! A positive mental attitude is most important. If you focus on the scenery, the company and the moment, not on the kilometres, then you find yourself reaching your destination with little problem. If you have done some training prior to the walk you will enjoy it all the more. The best way to prepare physically for the trip is to walk, walk and walk some more - preferably over a variety of terrain. Try to walk frequently. Even walking around your suburb will get you walk-fit. By the start of our tour you should be able to comfortably walk 15km, and try and do a few 20km walks on rough tracks. We know that this type of preparation is difficult to fit into a busy schedule. If you don't have the time to do long walks, we recommend doing regular stair walking sessions. Walking small distances frequently helps a lot as well. For instance, walking 3 - 5km four times a week, and 8km once a week, is a great help. If you're doing short training sessions, make sure you get yourself puffed and sweaty. Otherwise you won't benefit from your efforts. And start walking in the shoes you will wear on the walk now!
Cottages: Your accommodation for Day 2 & 3 is in individually set up cottages. You will be sharing a 2-bedroom cottage with other members of your group. These cottages have 2 individual private rooms, however the bathroom in the cottage will be shared among the 2 rooms. This is made up by the unique setting deep in Tarkine's wilderness on the banks of the Pieman River.
Lodges: Your accommodation for Days 4 & 5 is in cabins. Each cabin has two bedrooms and one bathroom that is shared among the 2 bedrooms. If you have booked a single supplement you will receive your own bedroom, however the bathroom in each cabin is still shared with the other bedroom in that cabin.
