Beginning from Cape Jervis, the starting point of the iconic 1200km Heysen Trail, ease into the hike along the Southern Ocean’s beautiful coast, taking in hidden coves and majestic views over Backstairs Passage, the narrow shipping lane between the mainland and Kangaroo Island. Explore the mystical Deep Creek and marvel at ancient grasstrees, colourful wildflowers and the majestic year-round waterfall. Walking distance: Approx. 6hrs, 13km – Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Guests can meet at Southern Ocean Walk, Deep Creek Conservation Park by prior arrangement. Tours leave the departure point at 9.30am. Hotel pick-up from Adelaide CBD hotels can be arranged from 6:30am (additional cost).
Commence your journey at Cape Jervis, the starting point of the iconic Heysen Trail, the longest dedicated track in Australia at a whopping 1200km. Ease into the hike along a gently undulating shoreline leading to Fisheries Beach and a series of hidden coves. Elevated vantage points offer majestic views over Backstairs Passage, a narrow shipping lane between the mainland and Kangaroo Island. Continue on to Deep Creek Conservation Park, where the landscape transforms from open grasslands into dense forests. The descent on to the sparkling waters of Blow Hole Beach is an absolute highlight. From here, climb Cobbler Hill for a short transfer to your charming homestead in Deep Creek, where pre-dinner drinks await.
Walking distance: Approx. 6½hrs, 13km – Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
After a hearty breakfast, pick up the trail from Cobbler Hill and traverse Aaron Creek and Tent Rock Creek to the famous Deep Creek. Open woodlands give way to thick bushland with ancient grass trees and wildflowers, culminating in the perfect lunch spot beneath year-round waterfall. From here, climb Tapanappa Ridge where a welcoming committee of Western Grey Kangaroos will oblige for cameras against a panoramic backdrop of the Southern Ocean.
Walking distance: Approx. 4½hrs, 9km – Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Re-join the trail from atop Tapanappa Ridge, taking in panoramic views of the Southern Ocean that extends all the way to Antarctica. From here, traverse a sheltered path that meanders through Pink Gum forests alive with brightly coloured finches. Continue on to Boat Harbour where the vegetation opens once more to reveal a secluded cove where dolphins are a common sight. Say farewell to Deep Creek Conservation Park as the Heysen Trail veers on to Tunkalilla Beach, a remote and very scenic wilderness of sand and surf.
Walking distance: Approx. 6½hrs, 14km – Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
The final leg of the journey introduces the striking cliff face of Newland Conservation Park overlooking Parsons Beach. Follow the shoreline to Waitpinga Beach and enjoy one last opportunity to feel the sand and sea between your toes. A short climb leads to the Newland Cliffs where photo opportunities abound. Keep an eye out for white-bellied sea eagles that breed along this stretch of coast. Hugging the coastline, the trail gradually descends to beautiful King Beach just outside of Victor Harbour.

The starting and finishing point of the tour is Deep Creek, which is about 1.5 to 2hr drive from Adelaide. For a relaxed start on the departure morning, guests could stay in Deep Creek the night before the departure. Please contact us for the pre-walk accommodation option and quote.

The Fleurieu Peninsula offers and amenable climate year-round with four distinct seasons. The Peninsula is typically Mediterranean with cool winters May to August ranging through 10-18°C, and warm to hot dry summers November to March ranging through 24-35°C, great for enjoying the beach and water activities.

The tour operator is at the mercy of nature in all her beauty and all her fury. The tour operator will under no circumstance knowingly place at risk the health and well-being of our guests and guides. In the case of natural threats, acts of God and the like (e.g. bushfires, impassable snow, etc) the tour operator may need to cancel a walk with very little notice. In some cases, this can occur after the walk has commenced. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel any walk up to 60 days prior to departure if a minimum of 4 walkers are unable to meet for a tour. If the tour operator needs to cancel for any reason, the cost of the walk or any other costs associated with travel to the designated pick up point, overnight accommodation, meals, etc will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore we strongly recommend travel insurance be taken out prior to travel.Force Majeure'Force Majeure' means (without restriction) any event which Onlyluxe Travel or its third party providers could not, even with due care, foresee or avoid. Force Majeure covers events such as, but not limited to, adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events beyond our control. In the case of Force Majeure Onlyluxe Travel will not accept liability, and reserves the right to change and cancel trips.EvacuationsIn rare circumstances, due to injury or unforeseen illness, the tour operator may need to evacuate you from a remote part of the walk. Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.Travel InsuranceIn view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid. We recommend insurance cover that covers any loss which may be suffered due to cancellation. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance against loss of baggage and medical expenses.
