Commencing in Adelaide, self-drive 50-minutes’ south to the magnificent McLaren Vale. Nestled between rolling hills and sandy beaches, McLaren Vale has a Mediterranean climate ideal for grape growing and is famous for its intensely flavoured shiraz.
First stop: D’Arenberg, a founding member of Australia’s first families of wine. At 10:30am, your experience begins in the Alternate Realities Museum on the ground floor of the d’Arenberg Cube, where a self-guided exploration will take you through a space filled with wall-to-wall art installations designed to awaken and excite your senses. All tours are assisted by the d’Arenberg smart phone application ‘The Alternate Realities Museum’ – advance downloads recommended.
At 10:45am, it’s time to play winemaker. A pallete of wine parcels, each with distinctive flavours and textures, are melded in search of balance, fullness and finesse. You then bottle, name and label a 750mL sample to take home and show off to your friends.
Following your blending session, indulge your tastebuds with an 8-course degustation lunch at chef-hatted d’Arry’s Verandah restaurant. D’Arry’s menu changes with the seasons, serving the freshest offerings from the McLaren region, at their mouth-watering best.
When you are ready, head over to the Vineyard Retreat to check-in to your accommodation for the evening. You will be staying in a contemporary and well-appointed guesthouse overlooking the vines and valleys. Make sure to enjoy the jacuzzi located high in the vineyard.
After a delicious breakfast, immerse yourself in Wirra Wirra, one of South Australia’s most loved wineries.
Embark on a guided tour to learn the secrets behind Wirra Wirra’s biodynamic vineyards including Scrubby Rise and Chook Block. Taste biodynamic wines on the picturesque Wirra Wirra jetty before moving into the original ironstone cellars to see where wines are stored and aged by the barrel. After the tour, head into the Cellar Door to taste 5 of Wirra Wirra’s best wines accompanied by a regional chocolate platter. Finish with a 2-course lunch and matched wines in Wirra Wirra’s Harry’s Deli restaurant.
After a delicious breakfast and check out, self drive to Gemtree Wetlands on a self-guided tour of the Ecotrail, learn about biodynamic grape growing and wine making at the Biodynamic Hut, enjoy a tutored tasting of Gemtree’s regional and fine wines, and graze over a secluded picnic under the majestic gum trees.
Gemtree is a family owned winery dedicated to growing better wine - naturally. The 306 acres of vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic. The wetlands have been lovingly restored from a degraded creek line into a biodiverse wetland with six interlinking dams and 50,000 native plants over 10 hectares making it a haven for native birds, plants and animals.
After a leisurely stroll along the 1 kilometre Ecotrail, you’ll be treated to a gourmet picnic with your choice of Gemtree wine in a picturesque and secluded setting amongst nature. The picnic features some of the best fresh produce and foods from local artisan producers prepared by the award-winning team at the nearby Salopian Inn.
