Biking the queen Charlotte Track

The Queen Charlotte Track is one of New Zealand's most popular hikes and one of the ten Great Walks. Since early 2013, the Queen Charlotte Track has also become one of the New Zealand Cycle Trails, becoming open to mountain bike riders. Queen Charlotte Track is now recognised as a dual purpose track for both walking and mountain biking, and as a classic bike trail in New Zealand.

Get ready to be amazed by the Marlborough Sounds, one of the most exquisite waterways in the world. The trail starts at the historic Ship Cove in the North. Feel like you're flying as you wizz from bay to bay and be amazed by the breathtaking views you will experience of the water and the beautiful green forest of life. For fit cyclists, it is possible to complete the entire 70km Queen Charlotte Track in just 2-3 days. Alternatively, you may want to take it a section at a time, incorporate a rest day, or possibly mix it up with a combination of hiking, cycling, and kayaking (See Queen Charlotte Trio Adventure).

While the track is well fitting for visitors who have had experience with mountain biking riding before, trips can absolutely be made appropriate for those of less riding skill. In terms of the texture of the land itself for a bike rider, the Queen Charlotte Track incorporates a mix of flat section, rounded inclines and downhill turns. There are however some more difficult areas which are pointed out on most Queen Charlotte Track cycling maps. Like with a hiking tour of the Queen Charlotte Track, a major perk of this trail is the transport available to and from the track, as well as the transport of luggage back to your accommodation. Just as hikers only need to carry a day pack instead of a giant hiking backpack, cyclists too can enjoy the ride without the extra weight.
