This 4-day Bay of Fires & Mt William walk incorporates some of Tasmania's most stunning scenery. Traverse spectacular beaches, admire incredible natural rock formations and swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Tasmanian east coast. This beautiful part of Tasmania's east coast has been named by Lonely Planet as the hottest travel destination in the world, and is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful places in Australia. This magnificent place is the cultural homeland to palawa people for over 10,000 years. Palawa people's culture and heritage is distinctively different from mainland Aboriginal cultures, both in traditional times and since European occupation. The walk provides you an unique an opportunity to walk with palawa guides in the footsteps of their traditional people, deepen your understanding of palawa culture and community history as well as immerse you in the natural and rugged beauty of wukalina and larapuna.
Departing from Launceston, the easy to moderate grade walk begins at the Bay of Fires on the northernmost section of Mount William National Park. From its long beaches to teeming wildlife, unique history and abundant flora, Mt William National Park is a place of constant fascination. From here you'll explore iconic sights such as Boulder Point, Cobbler Rocks, Cod Bay, the pink granite lighthouse at Eddystone Point, and beautiful Anson's Bay across sand and headlands encountering some rocky trails. Throughout the tour you'll admire the rich variety of bird life, with nearly 100 species occurring in the area. This remarkable region is also famed for its spectacular native wildflowers.
The walk is fully guided and supported. On day 1, we will give you a backpack (40lt day pack). You need to carry your personal belongings including toiletries and change of clothes, water and food for the day, including lunch and snacks. Approximately 7-10kgs in a backpack.
Your package includes 3 nights' accommodation on a twin share basis (single supplement available at additional expense), guided walks each day with experienced guides, all meals and snacks produced from local Tasmanian produce, using traditional recipes and ingredients native to Tasmania, transport each day and return transfers to/from Launceston.

Walking distance: approximately 11 km, 4.5 hours of walking, including breaks (Moderate Grade)
You will be picked up from your hotel in Launceston and transferred to the Aboriginal Elders Centre, to be welcomed by a palawa Elder. Enjoy a traditional morning tea after viewing the artefacts and historical photos within the Council centre having been issued with back packs, gaiters and rain jackets, if required.
09:00 am depart Launceston to enjoy a scenic drive North to the trail head while learning about the Aboriginal and European history of the districts they pass through.
The cultural walk begins with a Welcome to Country and a Smoking Ceremony, prior to a guided walk to the summit of wukalina. Following on from this you head off and hike to the top of Mt William. From the peak (216m) in clear weather, enjoy a picnic lunch and experience 360 degree views of the magnificent, and culturally significant, landscape laid out all around you.
Following lunch, you will be guided along a newly crafted walking track to the purpose built standing camp (krakani lumi), stopping along the way to hear cultural and botanical interpretations from our qualified guides, and potentially spotting one of the vast array of animal and bird species endemic to the area.
Once you arrive at Krakani Lumi you can relax in your private hut before regrouping to enjoy pre-dinner drinks, followed by a traditionally inspired Seafood dinner. Evening activities include interaction with a palawa Elder and the telling of the palawa Creation Story.
You'll stay two nights in the architecturally designed palawa inspired (domed) huts sitting deep at Cobler Rocks. Krakani Lumi (means "place of rest" in palawa kani) is a purpose built standing camp within wukalina/Mt William National Park, which consists of five culturally inspired sleeping huts and a communal building housing two showers, two toilets, a commercial grade kitchen, a domed lounge area and an open fire pit for story telling in the evening. The standing camp has a communal building with two showers and two toilets. The huts are stand alone glamping style. There is running water or electricity.
Walking distance: approximately 5 km, 2 hours of walking, including breaks (Moderate Grade)
After breakfast you will be guided along a traditional coastal pathway, which includes significant Aboriginal middens. Interpretation will focus on learning about traditional food sources, medicines and native animals.
Lunch will be served back at the Standing Camp, following which our guides will lead cultural sessions which include kelp and reed basket making, making and playing clap sticks, and working with shells and native animal furs.
After a traditional dinner including mutton bird, wallaby, and doughboys, guests will enjoy a starlight night walk - where you may encounter native wildlife such as wombats (prupalatina), wallabies (payathanima) and kangaroos, as well as possums and many more of Australia’s famous critters in this untouched landscape.
Walking distance: approximately 17 km, 6 hours walking, including breaks (Moderate to Hard Grade)
Walk south along stretches of pure white sand and past rocky headlands covered in the red lichen typical of the Bay of Fires region.
Lunch is enjoyed at the unusual Marsupial Lawns where the chances of spotting a wombat or two are quite high.
Arrive at the Aboriginal landholding of larapuna (Eddystone Point lighthouse precinct) in the mid afternoon, to one of the most beautifully restored Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage in Australia.
The Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage has been redesigned throughout to provide a purpose built experience for guests, while the beautiful exterior walls of local pink granite have been given new life.
You can then settle into your 'hotel style' room in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage, enjoy the lounge and extensive library of reference books, or take a seat on the broad veranda to watch the sun fade into a magnificent sunset.
Today provides an opportunity for you to explore the larapuna area - including the coastline, rock quarry and lighthouse precinct.
You will be offered a tour of the fully operational lighthouse, with unmatched views of the world-renowned Bay of Fires (larapuna) coastline awaits. Spot black swans and arctic terns or pelicans, sea eagles, and the odd whale or dolphin in the surf below.
After your tour, you may wish to spend time with your guides reflecting on key learnings from the cultural journey.
Lunch is served prior to the drive back to Launceston via a 'quirky café' stop in Derby, a little town becoming more famous by the day due to its place on the Mountain Bike 'map'.
Arrive back into Launceston at approximately 17:00 and enjoy farewell drinks and nibbles, before catching a flight home or settling into one of the city’s many boutique or main stream hotels.

In the case of natural threats, acts of God and the like (e.g. bushfires, impassable snow, etc) the tour operator may need to cancel a walk with very little notice. In some cases, this can occur after the walk has commenced. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel any walk up to 60 days prior to departure if a minimum of 4 walkers are unable to meet for a tour. If the tour operator needs to cancel for any reason, the cost of the walk or any other costs associated with travel to the designated pick up point, overnight accommodation, meals, etc will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore we strongly recommend travel insurance be taken out prior to travel.Force Majeure'Force Majeure' means (without restriction) any event which Onlyluxe Travel or its third party providers could not, even with due care, foresee or avoid. Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.Travel InsuranceIn view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid.
