Enjoy a delightful breakfast before a drive north to the ruined city of Jerash where you'll be transported back in time.
Marvel at majestic colonnades, temples, and theatres. This city was one of the ten prosperous, autonomous Decapolis cities that were renowned for their affluent living across the Roman world. Jerash, the only city of the Decapolis to have survived after being buried for ages under blowing sand, boasts a spectacular oval forum, colonnaded main avenues with astonishingly intact drains, two theatres, and the majestic Temple of Zeus.
Later, return to Amman for an exciting city adventure, where we'll stop at illustrious antiquities including the Citadel, which properly introduces you to the history of Amman, turquoise mountain, Roman Theatre, and the old city. From the lofty heights of the Citadel complex, take in the breathtaking views of the Jordanian kingdom's capital. Along the way, admire the captivating architecture of the city's street market.
Come evening, be treated to a welcome dinner at a local restaurant where we delight in traditional Jordanian cuisine.
Today, we journey to Petra to unearth this UNESCO World Heritage site characterised by ornate buildings, and learn about its rich history and culture.
Traverse the King's Highway, a former trade route that links Amman with Petra and winds through vast wadis (valleys) with stops along the way. Explore the ancient city of Madaba, also known as the city of the mosaics, the historical Mount Nebo, where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land, and the crusader fortress of Kerak, which is perched on a rocky outcrop.
Journey further south, arriving at Petra, one of the most remarkable ancient cities in the world and the most important historical monument in Jordan. Petra also referred to as the "rose-red city," is a magnificent sandstone collection of elaborate palaces, temples, and tombs hewn into the cliffs. Your expert guide will give you a well-detailed history of this New Wonder of the World.
You’ll stay at the 5 star Old Village Hotel & Resort, your home for the next three days. The hotel is a cosy stone hotel dating from the 1800s, where you enjoy around-the-clock assistance, unwind in one of its stunning pools with an impressive view of the mountains, and savour continental food. These next few days offer optional hiking routes within Petra.
Your adventure these two days brings you to discover the ancient Nabataean Kingdom of Petra in its entirety. Uncover the city's centre to explore its vast landmarks and also consider the option to hike the High Place of Sacrifice.
The stunning Nabataean Kingdom of Petra was a mediaeval area concealed for years before being found in 1812 by the Swiss adventurer Burckhardt. Petra is special for two reasons: First, it was built underneath a series of chasms rather than on a mountaintop, making it a fortified city. Second, it is cut right into the red and yellow sandstone rock, creating the most stunning façade that dazzles in the sunlight.
On this first day, your expert guide will lead you through the Siq, a treacherous passageway into Petra, which is flanked on all sides by towering cliffs. You will tour Al Khazneh, a complex temple referred to as The Treasury that was formerly inhabited by Arabs from the Nabataean Kingdom. As we make our way to the city's centre, we pass homes and visit the Royal Tombs. We also get to view this ancient city's expanse and unmatched splendour from a variety of angles. To explore further, there is an optional 850-stone-step hike to El Deir, a massive monastery carved out of rock.
You'll return to Petra on the second day, either for free time to further explore the city or an optional guided hike up to the High Place of Sacrifice, a clifftop sacrificial altar with amazing views over the rose-red city. Due to how difficult it can be to reach the High Place, very few people attempt it. Those that do succeed in reaching the summit are rewarded with breathtaking vistas of various sites they had previously visited.
Heading down the mountain, savour a delicious a picnic lunch. Later, we wind our way back along the city streets marveling at the stunning views of noteworthy monuments en route. Undoubtedly, your time in Petra is one you will never forget.
Today, from the comfort of our opulent desert tent, we explore Wadi Rum, a cultural World Heritage Site with a rich history. Be lost in the magnificence of this desert with deep red sands and a setting reminiscent of Mars. A guided visit to the fascinating archaeological site of Little Petra is an option for the morning, or you can unwind at your five-star lodging before we depart for the south.
You’ll arrive in Wadi Rum, a place of natural and cultural significance, where towering sandstone mountains rise dramatically from the arid desert's sandy floor. This is where Arab tribes were gathered by Lawrence of Arabia and Prince Faisal in preparation for the invasion of Aqaba during the First World War. Some scenes from the epic movie Lawrence of Arabia (1962) were also filmed here.
You’ll stay at Saraya Camp, a private luxury camp in Wadi Rum offering unrivalled comfort in the desert. Each cabin has a well-fitted bathroom, heating & air-conditioning, and other necessary facilities to enjoy a memorable stay. It's your gateway to enjoy and participate in memorable desert activities.
After unwinding at the camp, embark on an exhilarating 4 hour 4WD adventure to the highlights of this protected area. Cap off a magical day with an authentic zarb dinner experience at camp and unwind by the campfire while gazing at the skies.
This morning, depart Wadi Rum's Mars-like environment and journey to Aqaba, Jordan's only coastal city and the largest and most populous city on the Gulf of Aqaba, which is renowned for its stunning coral reefs. Spend time relaxing on the beach, go snorkeling over a coral reef, and engage in other thrilling water sports at this town on the Red Sea coast.
The rest of the day is free for you to unwind and take advantage of the amenities at the 5 star Hyatt Regency Aqaba Ayla Resort in Aqaba, where you’ll stay overnight. Laze by its private beach that offers breathtaking views of the Red Sea, where you can cool off and take in the scenery of the coastline. The resort features luxurious amenities, including spacious rooms with modern designs, multiple dining options, a serene infinity pool, and a full-service spa for ultimate relaxation. It's the perfect destination for a peaceful getaway or an adventure-filled vacation.
Later in the afternoon, gather together for a sundowner overlooking the tranquil sea before being treated to a delicious dinner savouring the taste of traditional Jordanian cuisine and sampling fresh local seafood.
Today we take the last trip to the Dead Sea, one of the most intriguing places on Earth. The Dead Sea is well positioned in Jordan to see several incredible sites of religious and historic significance with ease. Take advantage of your free time to float in the saline waters and smother yourself in Dead Sea mud, before heading to your hotel.
You’ll stay at Hilton Dead Sea Hotel & Spa, a luxury oceanfront hotel with three restaurants, three bars, two infinity pools, and a gym. It has direct beachfront access, making it the ideal place to unwind. You can take in the views from the rooftop bar or at the infinity pools while savouring sunset views. The walking level on this trip is rated Level 2 Leisurely/Moderate.
Level 1 Leisurely: Experience is not necessary; anyone fit and healthy enough to complete a weekend walk will thrive. Walks are often optional. Trails are seldom flat, so expect a reasonable number of ascents and descents. You normally walk for two to five hours per day; daily ascents will likely be around 985ft to 1,640ft (300m to 500m), perhaps with the odd day around 1,970ft (600m).
Level 3 Moderate: Expect easy, medium-length walks or harder, shorter walks. Some experience is useful, but not essential. Good health and reasonable fitness are important. There will be walks at higher altitudes and some longer, harder days. Generally, though, the underfoot conditions will be fair. A walking day is normally five to seven hours; daily ascents will likely be around 1,640ft to 2,625ft (500m to 800m), perhaps with the odd day around 2,955ft to 3,280ft (900m to 1,000m).
Level 5 Challenging: Fitness is vital with extended walking in mountainous terrain. You might also experience high altitude, challenging climates and remote locations. Trekking experience is desirable, but not vital if you are confident in your physical condition. Walking days are usually between six and eight hours, although they may be longer for passes or peaks. Daily ascents can be around 2,955ft to 3,280ft (900m to 1,000m), perhaps with the odd day around 3,610ft to 3,940ft (1,100m to 1,200m).
Level 7 Tough: Trekking experience is essential and preferably at altitude. You need complete confidence in your ability to trek for many days over difficult terrain. You may encounter extreme altitude and weather conditions and may need to use ice axes and crampons. Stamina is essential as walking days last six to nine hours (sometimes more on occasions). Daily ascents will likely be around 2,955ft to 3,280ft (900m to 1,000m), perhaps with the odd day around 3,610ft to 3,940ft (1,100m to 1,200m).
Split and optional grades: Where a trip falls between two grades, an intermediate or ‘split’ grade is used. For example, Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate). Occasionally there are optional ascents available; in this case, the grade will be highlighted.
Although this is a cultural trip, some days, such as those in Petra, are long and you should be ready to expend some energy. To do the optional 850 steps up to the monastery or the climb up to the High Place of Sacrifice you should have a reasonable level of fitness. Your leader can provide you with further advice about these hikes. It is not advisable to do the High Place of Sacrifice if you suffer from vertigo as there are some very steep narrow steps and cliffs. The leader always accompanies anyone doing this option. If you don’t do the optional hikes, there is still plenty to see by wandering through the ancient city.
