Today promises to be adventurous and also longer. Refuel with a delightful breakfast before we set out for today’s cycling expedition through some of the region's most stunning and varied landscapes. Our trail passes around Lake Benmore, the largest artificial lake in New Zealand. The lake's shoreline is dotted with inlets and secluded coves, perfect for quick rests between rides and photo opportunities. Then, it’s off to Lake Aviemore, a smaller but equally captivating body of water.
The route here is slightly challenging, with a few uphill climbs. However, it promises to reward you with panoramic views that’ll leave you astonished. A little further on, we’ll reach Lake Waitaki, the third and final lake of the day. The terrain here is more forgiving, with gentler paths allowing for a more relaxed ride. Ride along the lake’s perimeter and watch as the golden hues of the surrounding hills and sparkling water create an almost magical atmosphere.
The final leg of our ride today leads to the charming town of Kurow, nestled in the Waitaki Valley. Take some time to explore Kurow; perhaps, visit a local winery or enjoy a meal at one of the cosy cafes or restaurants before returning to your accommodation for the night in Kurow.
Level 1, Approx. 27 km (17 miles), 1-2 hours biking
After a hearty breakfast, you will embark on a thrilling ride through the verdant Pasquale Vineyard. With every pedal stroke, watch as rows of grapevines stretch out amidst a peaceful ambience. A highlight of your journey will be seeing the ancient Maori rock drawings. These intricate carvings, etched into the limestone by early Maori inhabitants, offer a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich cultural heritage. The drawings, depicting various figures and symbols, are a testament to the deep connection between the Maori people and the land.

New Zealand’s maritime climate makes November to April the most ideal months for travelling to the country.
The South Island’s temperature during summer ranges from 1030 ºC, with a pleasant 40 50% humidity. However, the country’s mountainous terrain and position in the path of the ‘Roaring 40s’ means its weather changes frequently, sometimes unexpectedly. Higher altitudes are always considerably cooler, and snowfall is not uncommon, even in summer. Ergo, you should ensure you have a good waterproof jacket and warm clothing.
Grading: The Alps to Ocean is graded introductory to moderate. You will need a reasonable level of fitness with an average daily distance of 50km and the longest day up to 72km. We suggest 90 minutes of cycling three to five times a week for the three months leading up to your trip. Some of the sections are on seal or hard packed gravel and are relatively easy to ride. Other sections are looser gravel which can be rough and uneven in places. The moderate sections over the Tarnbae Saddle and Sailors Cutting to the Benmore Dam include narrower tracks with some switchbacks and exposure in places. There are also plenty of hills so cycling up hills and on gravel and rougher terrain before your tour will enable you to really enjoy the fantastic and diverse scenery.
Trail Surface: 45% of the Alps 2 Ocean trail is compacted gravel Cyclists need to be confident riding on uneven surfaces and aware that riding on this surface will reduce cycling speeds.
