Arrive into Kingscote Airport (KGC) or the Sealink Ferry Terminal, Penneshaw, to begin your Kangaroo Island adventure. Your expert guide will meet you and help load your luggage into the custom 4WD vehicle.
Today, you’ll explore the beautiful north and south coasts of the Island. After a delicious morning tea, set out on your first nature walk through the Cygnet River Valley to Stokes Bay, both in the north of the island. As you wander the old country tracks, listen to the sounds of the bush – brightly coloured birds, cicadas, or perhaps just the sound of silence. Keep your eyes peeled for the koalas that live among the towering Eucalyptus trees, the small wallabies almost extinct on the mainland, and a kangaroo found nowhere else on Earth.
Lunch at a private bush camp is well deserved. Feast on King George Whiting (local sea fish), fresh salads and fine South Australian wines.
In the afternoon, head south for a private tour with your guide through the Seal Bay Conservation Park. There are no enclosures or cages at Seal Bay. Instead, you will be taken into the heart of the colony where young pups nurse and play in the surf, while old bulls patrol the rugged coastline. Your tour won’t follow a standardised script – your guide will be interpreting sea lion behaviour and what’s happening in the colony at that very moment. A truly exceptional wildlife experience!
In the evening, enjoy a delicious included dinner at your accommodation,
Today, you’ll explore the Island’s west, starting with a visit to the Kangaroo Island Land For Wildlife. A private wildlife refuge, the LfW KI aims to provide safe havens for animals and plants, while improving their habitat. Check out wildlife surveys targeting tiny endangered mammals and get an introduction to the bush, so the fire ecology experienced later in the day has context.
After, treat yourself to an elegant picnic lunch in the bush, featuring marinated poached chicken, fresh salads, cheeses and fantastic South Australian wine, beer, soft drinks and spring water.
In the afternoon, travel to Flinders Chase National Park, an area that was heavily affected by the 2019-2020 bushfires. You’ll visit the Park’s must-see sights – the Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch and the Cape Du Couedic Lighthouse – while learning about what is being done to regenerate and protect the area for the future. You’ll also see another colony of seals, who swim effortlessly through the crashing waves.
In the evening, enjoy a delicious included dinner at your accommodation.
Today, you’ll explore the Island’s south and east, starting with a visit to Pennington Bay. A renowned fishing and surfing spot due to its powerful swells, Pennington Bay is home to some of Australia’s most picturesque coastal scenery, where the glistening turquoise waters meet the shimmering white sandy beaches. Enjoy a home-baked morning tea on the sand and keep an eye out for the dolphins and seals that like to frolic amid the waves.
Next, journey east to Pelican Lagoon, a picturesque saltwater lagoon named for its large population of pelicans. Adjacent to the lagoon is excellent kangaroo habitat, where you may also see tammar wallabies sheltering amid the tea-tree thickets.
Having worked up a thirst, stop in at False Cape Wines. The deep alluvial soils of the Willson River overlying limestone are perfect for grapevines – it would be rude not to sample the local drop! After, enjoy a local produce picnic overlooking the vines.
NOTE: This itinerary is provided as an example only – prevailing conditions and local arrangements may cause variation.
Continue on to Cape Willoughby Lighthouse. Established in 1852 and originally known as the Sturt Lighthouse for Captain Charles Sturt, the lighthouse is the oldest of its kind in South Australia. The light shines a warning for sailors traversing the treacherous Backstairs Passage – the 11-kilometre-wide strip of water between Kangaroo Island and the mainland. Take time to explore the lighthouse and the granite canyon known as ‘Devil’s Kitchen’. Then, take a walk along the long white sandy beach or along the quiet backwaters of the Chapman Estuary.
Head back to Penneshaw via a 4WD trail known as Binney’s Track. The trail runs adjacent to Baudin Conservation Park and offers sensational views across the Backstairs Passage to the Fleurieu Peninsula. If you’re lucky, you might see a rare glossy black cockatoo feeding in the she-oak forest or a pod of dolphins surfing the waves below.
At the end of the day, you’ll be dropped off at Kingscote Airport or the Sealink Ferry Terminal, Penneshaw, to commence your onward journey.
